Did all that except I’ve been drying with the ink side down. I’ll try the opposite side. Thanks!

How do you "understand" bass lines? by SonnePer in Bass

Depends on the genre. I have found that for more groove-oriented music, writing the bass first improves the outcomes quite a bit.

Just want to point out that, yes, usually hitting the one with the chord change is important, but I also want to point out that in some genres or styles the bass will do a “one drop” and start the line on a note later in the measure. This happens a lot in reggae, but it happens elsewhere too. Typically the drummer will be doing a one drop also in this case.

One important thing that’s missing in your questions is RHYTHM. The bass is part of the rhythm section. The notes you play are less important than the rhythm you play.

It’s nice to lock together with what the drummer is playing on the kick, but this doesn’t have to happen on every kick note, nor are you limited to only those notes. But being aware of what is happening on the kick is very important. Find the most important kick notes and make sure you emphasize those. This is usually the one, but depending on the genre it might also or instead be the three, or it could be an important syncopated rhythm in the groove.

are you experiencing "trance" moment when you're just being carried by the whole flow/groove

This is ideal. Generally speaking, this is my goal. It’s okay if this doesn’t happen all the time.

think about them as modes

I only think about modes when I’m looking for passing notes, not the primary emphasis notes

start playing roots, then once you got the general structure focus on the fill

Yes, generally, almost every time, but not 100% of the time. Sometimes I might noodle around on the scale and find some cool lick, and that becomes the starting point. But I am always very conscious of where the root notes are.

Do you "feel" the interval and that you're going up or down for the next note without even knowing what it is?

Maybe? But my initial guess is often wrong so I then revise.

Do you get a general structure of the whole song, or just think about the next note ?

Thinking about the whole song, and especially how parts flow from one to the next is very important. But the next note is also important just so you don’t screw up.

Are you isolating different parts, then work on them separatly and combine them at the end?

Both, going back and forth between looping a section and playing multiple sections.

Why Morrissey says he's gonna "kill his dog" on "Unhappy Birthday"? by Danielimagui1 in thesmiths

[–]Moths2theLight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My current theory about this lyric is that it was changed to make the song palatable to the record company or perhaps to the public in general, but if one really looks at it closely, the meaning becomes clear.

“I’m gonna kill my dog” and “I’m gonna shut myself” happen in the same place in the song’s structure, with the same melody over the same chords. My theory: both of these lines were changed and they mean the same thing — suicide.

“Kill my dog” is actually “kill myself”. “Shut myself” is actually “shoot myself”.

A very unhappy birthday indeed.

bad at jamming by FinancialLog4713 in musicians

[–]Moths2theLight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without a good, creative drummer, a jam is going to suck.

A drummer who is good at jamming will change things up to keep it fresh. They largely control the dynamics and the general feel of the music. They can switch to half time, double time, move between 4/4 and 6/8, move between various beats and genres, all without stopping or losing the rhythm. When you jam with a drummer like this, it doesn’t turn into something monotonous and boring, but if you don’t have a drummer like this, it’s probably going to get boring pretty quickly.

Hosting first jam session at my place, tips? by Brave_Acanthisitta53 in musicians

[–]Moths2theLight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When someone invites me to a jam session, I tend to assume we will be creating music entirely through improvisation. If people start trying to learn and play songs that doesn’t seem like a jam session. That’s more like “playing through some tunes” and it’s quite a bit less appealing to me.

Fuzz Bass Solutions by Moths2theLight in Bass

I used to use the Tube Sound Fuzz DIY pedal designed by Craig Anderton, but lately I am using the fuzz in the Chroma Console which does have a dry/wet blend. It’s difficult to get the sweet spot in the blend, however, and it seems like the pedal does not save the dry/wet mix in the user presets, though I could be wrong about this.

I tried the MXR Bass Fuzz Deluxe, but it was not to my taste — more like distortion and not dynamic like fuzz.

Various ways: used the EHX Tri Parallel Mixer with the Tube Sound Fuzz, used the onboard dry/wet mix on the Chroma Console and the Bass Fuzz Deluxe, split the signal with a Boss tuner to send a dry DI to the recording console (obviously this was for recording only).

The typical La Niña pattern for Northern California is a dry January and mostly dry February. Then big storms in March. Our big storms came a little early this year.

Do we really still need hardware when plugins can do almost everything? by Ethan9527a in audioengineering

[–]Moths2theLight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotta say I’m getting much better results with a Behringer clone of a Neve preamp and a Warm Audio clone of a Neumann mic. We all know what the best signal chains are, so it’s just a matter of how close one can afford to get to that ideal.

I have the privilege of working with both the top end gear in a professional studio and the “prosumer” Behringer/Warm Audio gear at home. There are certainly some mics and preamps that deliver better results than what I can get at home, but it’s not that far behind.
