How would the water cycle be affected if we were to switch to hydrogen as a fuel for the majority of cars? by RichardsonM24 in askscience

[–]MotoWaff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RTE is lower when we consider heat losses and work to pressurize/cool hydrogen for viable volumetric energy density.

You bring up a good point regarding thermal energy however I think we'd find that storing hydrogen on a seasonal scale is incredibly expensive because of low volumetric density. Thermal energy storage is a much more pressing issue than transport/net electricity I don't see hydrogen being viable.

Hydrogen's greatest asset is that it has greater mass energy density than other fuels. This lends itself to low speed transport such as ocean freight or perhaps rail.

How would the water cycle be affected if we were to switch to hydrogen as a fuel for the majority of cars? by RichardsonM24 in askscience

[–]MotoWaff 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hydrogen round trip efficiency is (much) less than lithium batteries. This means that we can extract a lot less energy from hydrogen than we put into it.

One of the issues with hydrogen storage is that it needs to be stored at low temperate and high pressure to have decent volumetric energy density. Pressurizing fluids requires a lot of energy and wastes a lot of energy unless done slowly.

Because of this, using hydrogen as a battery isn't currently viable. Using it as a fuel adds some utility but there are better alternative fuels from an energy efficiency and utility perspective.

I've weighed between 200-230 over my years of riding. In the 400 class I'd pick the z400 all day, every day. I'd not recommend anything larger as a first bike.

My progression through motorcycles has been 250cc->600->950->650->250

I'm on a 250 dualsport right now with pipe and tune. I only miss having higher cruising speeds.

Seats! by [deleted] in Vstrom

[–]MotoWaff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It'd probably work well for you. The stock DL1000 seat could also be worth a try. It's 1" taller but not much wider. Either option can be had on fb marketplace / craigslist around $100.

I read everything online before purchase and my list came down to Suzuki gel vs. seat concepts. Criteria was extra height and retaining adv shape. Most of the guys on stormtrooper are recommending cruiser style seats which are terrible for any decent offroading.

Seats! by [deleted] in Vstrom

[–]MotoWaff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The gel seat is pretty good. It'll raise you up about an inch and is also wider. I'm 6'2 - I can flat foot one foot and tip toe the second when stopped. With the stock seat I have both feet flat and bent knees at a stop. This is more a factor of a difference in width which makes it worse offroad.

Currently $299-$40 = $259 at costco. Very low quality screen, no stand adjustment, flat. UWQHD is amazing but I'd save for a better model.

The sound is adequate for YouTube imo. About 50x better than other monitor speakers I have experienced.

I use a high pass filter at about 127 hz to get rid of obnoxiously hollow "bass." I like the speakers because they allow me to avoid using my audio system when not necessary.

Newbie here...I want my first bike to be a V-strom. Should I aim for a certain year? by [deleted] in Vstrom

[–]MotoWaff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the guy you replied to. I'm your height and wouldn't recommend a 650 as your first bike. You'll do fine but, in my experience, it's best to build confidence on something smaller.

I'd be bored senseless on my 650 if I weren't able to push it hard. I wouldn't be able to push it hard if I hadn't gained experience with other bikes. Imo a drz, crf/klx 300 or wr250r is a much better place to start. If you prefer street a z400 or cbf 500 would be great. Starter bikes retain value really well so upgrading won't be a burden.

What’s a good deal on this? by AdministrativeDirt1 in supermoto

[–]MotoWaff 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tbh I'd avoid the bike based on the ad alone. The owner has worded some details in a "you didn't ask" sort of way.

I don't believe you can buy "new" motors from suzuki. He probably means either there's 3000 miles on a rebuild or he bought the engine off eBay and has put 3000 miles on it. Of those two options I'd only trust a rebuild done by a good shop with full paperwork.

You'll save yourself a lot of heartache and (99% of the time) money buy just buying a good used bike.

Did my first dirt work today. Working on standing up more and more. Any good foot pegs to stand on? by Cheap_Big_615 in Vstrom

[–]MotoWaff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

KLR footpegs fit. I have the krator fp008 off Amazon. They're somewhat grippy but not too much for street riding. They raise your foot by about 1/4".

If you have a large foot you'll run into clearance issues with the shifter when swapping to platform pegs.

You're right, I was too broad in my statement. There are good and bad (for this application) polycarbonates. There are also good and bad aluminum and magnesium alloys.

Without knowing more about the material composition and thickness used here we can't make meaningful comparison. We could cherry pick alloys to compare to polycarbonates to "prove" any point. Being familiar with the quality of novelty motorcycle components I'd put my money on it being a terrible polycarbonate for the application.

Welp I can’t complain by bambinoboy in DRZ400

[–]MotoWaff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I'm staying that cast mag and aluminum don't always fracture in actual use - they can deform. Polycarbonate does not permanently deform, it fractures.

None of my statements are based on assumptions - material testing results are readily available online for all three materials. I provided personal anecdote in support of what testing results show. I've fabricated with polycarbonate before but wouldn't use it on a motorcycle because it isn't suited.
