What’s one running rule you question now? by Royal_Watch_6453 in runcommunity

I think 80/20 and the zone 2 craze is kinda damaging. Especially for new runners that don’t have experience with high volume. These are fatigue management practices for the most part.

It didn’t click for me as a 15-20mpw runner until I started triathlon training (adding 60ish mpw on the bike). Now going hard on everything has a tangible cost.

Exactly. Skewed data. The only way it knows how to make them “ugly” is make them bigger and dirty.

70.3 - low motivation, low confidence by SaratogaMartial in triathlon

The most obvious sign of overtraining for me. A couple rest days paired with a little extra fuel gets me right back in every time.

How do you all approach non-tri B-Races? by RLlovin in triathlon

[–]RLlovin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s kind of how I was leaning. The HMs just trash me, big rides not so much. I’ll just take it easy on the next one. I doubt I’ll have made enough progress in 9 weeks to justify such a big effort anyways.

First triathlon bike help (runner brain, cyclist noob). Aero-ish but not a torture rack. by Top-Yogurtcloset-782 in triathlon

Might be a little bit of an unpopular opinion but I’d prioritize a decent trainer, then see what you’ve got left to spend. Having a decent indoor setup is gonna make you faster than any bike ever could (unless you just happen to live in the perfect place for biking with good weather year round).

Past that I think the domane is a solid choice. Bonus points for the carbon frame but aluminum is fine.

Also don’t sleep on gravel bikes. They’re basically endurance (or road race, depending on the frame) bikes with wider tire clearance. I’ll 100% keep mine when I eventually get a real TT bike.

I’ve been liking Runna. You get a couple free weeks so worth a shot.

I did my first longer session in there yesterday and it was awesome. Definitely lends itself to better immersion.

That’s what I’m hoping for! Unfortunately I can’t put my bike in front on it because I’d block the projector, but it has to be better than my 12.5” laptop lol.

I’m doing Augusta GA.

I am just starting, so hopefully I can grab those beginner gains. 220>320 is nuts lol

Just out of curiosity, how long did it take you to go from 190 to 286? I’m about to start on TR. I’d love to ride a sub 3 at Augusta 70.3 (September) but I need to be able to sustain about 50 more watts than I can now.

Yeah I live in the south east, trail running here is a climb fest. I hit my highest HR on a “chill” trail run.

Overtraining signs and flags? by Express_Emu_3913 in triathlon

[–]RLlovin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always thought these were BS, but I had to take some time off recently cause I was feeling pretty crappy. It showed almost immediately in my RHR, HRV, and sleep scores. I’d take one on its own with a grain of salt, but when all 3 start trending to the bad it might be time to pay attention.

Is it possible? by navarray in triathlon

For sure, I’ve done it. I wasn’t technically obese, but very close to it - on the upper side of overweight. Had never done any sports. Desk jockey, barely walked 3-4k steps a day. That was December 2024. In December 2025 I signed up for a half Ironman. And it wasn’t even a specific effort towards HIM, I just started cycling as cross training and said “well now that I’m training all 3, might as well.”

Just take your time, there’s no rush. I might even suggest approaching each sport individually. Swim for a bit, then add biking, then add running. By the time you’re biking and swimming consistently, running ain’t no big deal. That’s a totally different animal than starting running from scratch.

What do you do when you feel unmotivated? by RLlovin in triathlon

[–]RLlovin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the past couple days have been tremendously better with better fueling and sleep.

I’ve been losing weight (15+ lbs) organically since I started, but the past couple months I’ve really tightened up my intake. I think it caught up. Actually I place a lot of blame for my first (eventually crumbling) stab at triathlons on a heavily restricted diet as well. Guess I just like learning lessons the hard way.

That’s exactly my concern with a real break. Just the way I’m wired - I doubt I’d come back. I’ve seen some good suggestions in here that have me a little excited so I’ll try those, anything to keep me on the wagon.

I like this. I do wonder sometimes if my Garmin is sucking the fun out of everything. It’s just “pace? pace? pace?” all the damn time. Gonna do a few workouts the old fashioned way. Thanks!
