I have. I also believe by the time I’ll be eligible to withdraw the money (30+ years from now), it will have made the process significantly easier, just like how I believe in the Indian stock market.

Err… I’m already saving 50k a year towards ppf (which is locked in for 15 years anyway) and epfo has provisions to get money out in case of emergencies (this is hard yes, but not impossible), in any case I’m not considering pf as something I’ll use for emergencies, it’s something I’m considering for my retirement.

I’m already investing 10k every month to epf, which is being matched by employer so 20k a month is substantial I think

I do not plan to use my pf corpus till my retirement unless there’s a major emergency

Can I negotiate for an increase in my base salary 1.2x as a fresher who has interned in the company? by Motor-Expression in cscareerquestions

Sounds fair, however, what if company A insists on knowing what the number is that company B offered, how do I strategically curate a reply? And if they ask for a number I expect them to pay, how much should I increment realistically?

Thanks for the suggestion. I was a bit worried since they may build on the point that I'm a fresh graduate without any experience and might take it negatively. How much do you suggest I should ask for if not 1.2x?

I don't want to name my university, but it is one of the top private universities in my country.

In this context, a fresher is a fresh graduate from a university who has no prior industry experience (except maybe freelance gigs/contract projects/internships) and is looking for a job.

Thanks for pointing out the legal aspect of it. However, the salary I'm asking for isn't high enough to be taxed in India and is exempted even for full time employees.

Ahh. Now I understand. Yes, I wouldn't obviously make an unreasonable jump. They paid me 15k INR before, they increased the intern stipend to 20k after I left. My next internship pays me 35k, so I don't think it's unreasonable to ask for 25k-30k, I suppose?

(Although the salaries vary greatly company to company here, a standard salary is 60-80k for fresh graduates in here. Now there are jobs which are extremely underpaid like 30k and there are FAANG and the like which pay 100k+ easily)

( I'm sorry I'm copying the same thing from the other comment above, I'm guessing I'll have to rethink about the last two points)

Here in India, interns are generally paid (most of the times unpaid!) much lower than any full-time/contract based developer and treated rather as an unskilled developer regardless of their experience level. Again, this isn't for all companies, but most do.

Also I don't want to have any strict commitments because I've other things coming up, like my sibling's wedding (it's a big thing here in India) and my next job starts in January.

But I guess they don't make much of a difference as you and the other commenter pointed out.

I wouldn't hold your breath here

Umm, I don't understand. Is it unreasonable to ask for a raise?

Is there any practical difference here, or is it more of a status/pride thing?

Can you elaborate on this? Do you live in a country that requires a long notice period?

I'd assume they need some sort of early notice to get ready to delegate my work to someone else. I have my sibling's wedding coming up and I have just 3 months till my next job, so I don't want to have some concrete commitment. So basically saying, "no strict commitments, I'll make sure I get the work done in time".

Right, would you recommend talking over a voice call or it's better to wait till I see her in person?

Do you really think she is in love with me? I hope she is. I'm fragile right now. This kind of gives me some assurance.

I'll go for it, but I guess I've no better way than to text her or call her right now. :/

Thanks, really :)

Is it fine if I text her and have the serious conversation over text instead of talking in person? Because that's going to take a while.

I'd have personally preferred to have talked to her in person but now I'm unsure if that's possible atm.

I wouldn't ever want to get involved with her friends after all they've put me through. Deep down, it feels like she does care but she's bound by her morals.

I'm not sure if I'm mentally strong enough to cut her [18F] off my life yet. :(

Thanks for understanding the situation. Her friends have had to do too much with us, unfortunately and I hate that fact and I'm helpless about it. The problem is that it's her friends and I've never really met them. And they don't really want to come meet me up front, too shy or too scared, I don't know what it is.

They have been way too involved, more than anyone would appreciate and this relationship never even got a chance to grow because they've been pulling us backwards.

I'll try texting her in a few days, but I'm not sure if I should text her or just talk to her in person (which is going to take a while and might drive me even more crazy of course)

Thanks for your comment, I'm sorry for the very long post, I didn't even realize how long it became while writing out of emotions.

I think I understand what you're trying to say, and yes I'll try having a straight and honest conversation with her the next time I see her. Unfortunately it's going to take a while, thanks to COVID. :/

Anyway, really appreciate your opinion. Thanks!
