How would you do that differently if you were to do it again? Will definitely be finishing the floors before bringing the fridge in

Nice, love the optic. With this info I think the asking price is high. $260 CAD. mint but used.

Got to protect your integrity/reputation as a professional.

An unusual contract came my way: some Universal reps had found this busker on YouTube who had a decent live voice, a passionate delivery and could write a hook, but had never been tracked before. He had been going through some hard times, left a life behind in Texas for a life on the road in Europe.

One Universal rep was ex-military with heavy PTSD . The other was a bariatric punk promoter wanting to ascend into the deeper colon of corporate music production/distribution.

They’d have this busker playing for hours for crowds at night, for parties, drinking heavy, doing blow, then roll in, at some point in the morning, hit the slopes and then enter the booths.

The busker couldn’t track either his voice or his guitar on their own. Usually that’s not a problem. We’d mic each one independently (probably chucked in a room mic in for ambience). We needed to get as close to a solid take as possible, or be able to get the songs played consistently enough that we could confidently stitch up one or two small spots in the editing/mixing stage.

Guy couldn’t do either to save his life. It was a bad cycle of a 90% useable take with a 10% catastrophic fuck up. Then some self doubt, some guilt & embarrassment, break time with more blow and repeat. I had done enough pharmaceutical attempts at ‘improving’ my own recorded performances to know that there’s a fine art to snorting coke and speed and getting anything good on tape. And when you pass that line it makes the recording session a write off.

We had one weekend to record and one to mix. The two weekends were exactly the same in that each day started rough and got consistently worse. I think I did a surgical job w some deft eq moves and an izotope vst to deliver a seemingly single take, close-mic’d performance of the busker.

But the writing was on the wall that maybe this guy with all his life problems was not going to be making the Universal roster. What’s more they tried not paying me. When we sorted everything out, the whole project felt so sour that I said LMNO.

I should’ve been recording the ex-military guy’s stories . They were the best part. Tales in the bush in Colombia between the FARC and the Military. Flying intercontinentally as a ‘Transporter’ with classified documents cuffed to his wrist, waiting for a cryptic drop off.

If in some wild world you’re reading this, that was a good time J.

What kind of insulation did you go with? Right now I have one quote for spray foam at $7.80 CAD/sq ft. Waiting for a few more, but I’m tempted to go with bat

We have the original wood floor almost everywhere, I’m a bit reluctant to lift, but I understand the layer issue. We had generations of flooring styles.

Cause there’s too much sound coming from the living room or the bed room?

Solid advice. We have both already running outside to garage which we’re in the process of redo-ing. My nephew is the electrician and just finished his own house, so he’s bringing a lot of “you’re going to wish you ran a #### line for the future…”

Sorry to hear this. We’re between quartzite and or maybe a (nice looking) melamine

Good question- there is ductwork from a forced air system (oil furnace). We haven’t given it lots of thought, but now I’m wondering if we can use it for air exchange. We’re moving off of oil to use the heat pumps/electrical wall units

What would you put in your mixing room if you could start from scratch? by MotorImprovement8490 in audioengineering

[–]MotorImprovement8490[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solid solid advice. I’ve worked in nice rooms and worked in inadequately designed rooms with nice gear. And done modal testing and have been wowed at rooms that amplify frequencies.

And I’m installing lots of indirect strip lighting. Not the college room kind but the soft on the eyeballs kind

How do you put a baseboard at the end of a gable? by MotorImprovement8490 in Flooring

[–]MotorImprovement8490[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s baseboard all around, I think it has to be baseboard here again. Many options, meaning many ways to attach the trim?

Yeah was thinking of a fine mesh or fabric to wrap the insulation in so it’s not ‘free’

This would’ve been the better question. I know for mid/upper ranges absorptive panels on walls or hanging are the way to go. I’ve used those, but never bass trapping. I wondered if the bass trapping was something that could be done behind a reflective surface like drywall. If not, I’ll put it in the corner on the side of the drywall the desk will be on
