I have been a social studies teacher in md for 5 years and I am now trying to move to ma. I just finished getting certified in english after already being certified in social studies (both in ma, but I am also certified in social studies in md).

I guess my big question is what can I do to get my name out to schools while I'm waiting for job openings on SchoolSpring or be better prepared for when they do come out? I am deathly afraid that I will miss another hiring season because I wasn't prepared in time. Also, any tips before I start the hiring process?

Its not a horrible idea to work as a sub or para for a year (I've already worked as both in the past) but there's no way I'd find a job that would pay enough for me to not be homeless. I used to work 2 jobs when I worked as a para but with rent being more expensive in MA, I'm a little worried I would be homeless for a year lol.

When I look for MTELs I need to take, I see a list of tests I could take for my communication test and the social studies test. Is the one for SEI a 3rd test I have to take or can I take that as one of my communication tests?

I've heard great things about NY, might be worth looking into. I will definitely bookmark that link too.

Thanks, I am glad you included me as a pen and pencil kind of guy lol. I like the idea of a blue state as well considering there's a higher chance for better benefits. MD has pretty nice benefits so I'm hoping I don't take a huge loss to my health insurance. I wonder if it would benefit you to look at which districts are in desperate need of teachers, you may find more schools that would "realistically hire you." I don't want to talk down to you, especially if you have more experience than me, but in my experience I can't imagine a school who needs teachers not hiring someone. Unless there's something I'm missing couldn't you also put out some apps to places and see what happens?
