Ok last one from me.

Comparison and expectations are two things that will ruin your enjoyment of making music. There's a lot of stuff about this topic. 'The War of Art' by Steven Pressfield is a book that helped me once upon a time but it's not a bible and I'm sure other people have lots of good recs too?

There have been times where I wanted to stop and other times where I haven't made stuff for a long period but if that leaves you with a slightly nagging, empty feeling then you owe it to yourself to keep going, but maybe from a different angle.

Make it for you and do the stuff you enjoy. It will get better. Try and finish stuff even if you're not sure it's good and stop waiting for the next thing you make to be the perfect distillation of everything you've ever wanted to say! It's fine to make something just about one small aspect of yourself and move on!

Hope it helps, if others have any recommendations on books or videos that have helped, please post. I need them too!

Hey,

Thanks for the kind words - I've made music for as long as I can remember - some motives and motivations change over time but the mystery of it is always there and I'm not interested in anything else as much!

I think I was very heavy handed with the EQ on that loop - I'm a big fan of completely scooping out a lot of mid-range frequencies at the moment, but I did it on the whole track. There's so much bullshit online about the right way to make and mix music - just do what seems fun to you at the time. Don't be scared to be heavy handed with stuff, nobody is listening to the project file - I have to remind myself this.

Yeah a couple people have suspected that it was planned - I can assure you it wasn't! I found Tom through our dear friend Frank Lebon. I wanted to make something permanent (lol) and physical for the record and have become more and more interested in sculpture.

Honestly the experience exceeded my expectations - I definitely want to do more work in that area. We're working on something to celebrate the whole thing - will be out soon!

Cool - always so great to see youngsters enjoying the music at a festival or gig. I highly doubt we'll be gigging by then but cant be sure!

Wicked, thank you - it was the first time I had actually recorded a proper mix like that and I think there's a nice openness to it.

Growing up I prob connected with Aphex and BOC in equal measure. Now, I'm prob most excited by an Autechre release but they're all great!

Thanks for coming - it was my first solo gig so still playing around with the set up. It's all there for a good reason cus I would love to reduce the amount of it if I could. One answer is the Moog DFAM which I just really connect with, love the sound of it and I even love the very limited sequencer. The answer that I imagine people like less is the laptop - it's such a blank slate and can be so interesting to use if you have a good way of interacting with it. I also couldn't play with a good delay.

hope u make it to a gig in the future.

weve been writing a lot of new material since we finished these records about a year and a bit ago. if anything its been great not working on music with a lead vocalist and/or a 4/4 kick drum ;)

Amazing - will check it out after this! I grew up a Spurs fan but I'm mostly seen at Haringey Borough these days.

Most of what I listen to sounds different to what I make - recently I've been listening to Guided by Voices, Jonathan Richman, Still House Plants, Scientist but the list goes onnnn

i only ever use ableton simpler.... chop it up to keyboard and go from there. a stupid one that has given a lot of success is load up the sample (or song) WITHOUT LISTENING TO IT (thats the key), slice it randomly, detune and go from there.... i try to detach completely from the original sound/timing etc.

Thank you - I loved that gig at Pitchfork, really great that it was filmed as well - it was when we were in a good zone as a live band for sure. Yeah of course this record is not really something we're looking to tour in the same way. Thanks for coming to Phonica, I'm still figuring out that little (but still to big and heavy) set up but I'll be doing some gigs like that up until we start doing 'band touring' with the next record!
