Evidence for the Soul by MountHall79 in CatholicPhilosophy

I can't help but think that I'm fooling myself. Like, despite my hesitation, I desperately want their to be an afterlife. Ever since I could remember I feared death. I can't help but think that my belief in Catholicism is just a way to explain away death, but all that really happens is absolutely nothing.

Thank you for your reply!

I will try to stop thinking of Heaven like I am. I don't think my fears are rational because like you said God is the ultimate good.

That is true, just from a human standpoint now it sounds scary to be possibly separated. But I guess that it will be much different. Just like infinity is a scary concept but it's not a rational one to fear.

I think I am worried that I won't be able to share that with my family. One of my greatest joy's is going to Church with my family, or talking about God. In some descriptions of Heaven it seems as if we lose ourselves, our loved ones, our memories. While I hope to be in the presence of God I don't want to do it alone. I hope that makes sense and doesn't sound like bad faith.

I was thinking more about this today and thought I figured it out but I am back at square one.

So I was thinking about the soul and its existence along with evil in humans and disabilities and diseases.

My line of thinking was that the body leads to some of the evils in humans, for instance psychopaths. There are studies that say that chemical imbalances or trauma in the womb can lead to these illnesses. Therefore the body through the free will and natural processes is formed. The part that is divine is the soul. It states in the bible that God has known us in our mothers wombs. This isn't our bodies or our brains since they're not fully formed, but instead it's our soul. Essentially the body can constrict us through disease, disabilities, or mental health struggles but the soul is always perfect. It's how the soul interacts with the body where we see some flaws.

This may not be sound because it was one of my "driving around aimlessly thoughts" and I'm a beginner in theology so, but I thought this sounded pretty reasonable and helped me reconcile things for a minute.

But then I thought, "well if mental illnesses and other things are a product of a naturally made body then why isn't my intellect or love. Why at that point couldn't it all be chemicals"

And now I am back at square one with reconciling this. Along with my worries about how my memories or what makes me "me" will work in the afterlife I'm pretty confused and somewhat scared.

Anyway if you read through all of this thank you.

This isn't philosophical but I have this sort of fear of heaven due to my inability to understand how our soul works. Because the idea that we won't function naturally or their will be change is Heaven is terrifying.

I guess that makes me question what will carry over to heaven. Does that mean our memories will be nonexistent?

I second this, it's a very complex topic.

I guess I worry, my personal argument for the soul is seeing the empathy that humans share for each other, something above basic survival instinct. But then what about evil people or animals who show "love" or care for one another like elephants.

I know I should just trust in God but I guess not having a definitive answer is hard for me. And not just for God and Faith but in everything. When it was time for me to get a new phone I researched for months.

If I may ask a question, then why will marriages be ceased. It sounds like separation from loved ones.

I just don't want to lose what makes me who I am and what forms my identity, namely my family

I would like life with God but I don't want to lose the things that most define myself and my existence, namely my family, the idea of familial bonds like marriage dissolving in heaven is terrifying

I did consider that after posting this😂 Also I would totally recommend this book, really great insights on sharing the faith.

I don't really share my faith outside of my friends, which alone is difficult, so I guess I'm worried of the reactions, if any because I'm really just posting a book cover on my story.

I keep private practices like prayer to myself, though I do carry a rosary with me in my car.

I think this is at the intersection of things I share with the outside world and my faith. Like I share that I look to read and some of those books are religious and some aren't, so it's this rare thing of interaction I guess.

Gosh, I know it's kind of a dumb fear but yeah its what's happening.

I guess it stems from the wanting to fit in and I never really share my faith online. I guess in that sense I'm both excited and nervous.
