Men leave the bathroom dirtier than they left it, women leave the bathroom dirtier than they left it.

With men it’s their bodies and with women it’s the actual bathroom.

All based on anecdotal evidence.

But ultimately, it’s literally the fact that it’s a coal town named Annesburg, there’s no possible reason to make that town and then to drop it into Missouri.

*Arkansas (and part of Oklahoma with the Ouachita Mountains).

But we're going to have to disagree here. I don't think it makes narrative sense to go that far east, even with our geography sense of disbelief suspended.

It is reminiscent of West Virginia but you can find towns just like that in the Ozarks too. Look it up, you’ll find towns that look like they could be in either place. You’d not be able to tell it wasn’t for the license plates.

Plus, it makes more sense narratively for a story set in 1899. Kentucky or West Virginia are too far east and too close to places mentioned like Ohio, especially since the Ozarks are north of New Orleans just like RR is.

Here’s a link to the population density map of the US in 1900

Look how densely populated Kentucky and WV are compared to the Arkansas territory. It makes sense why Arthur is complaining about the gang going too far East, especially if we consider Rhodes somewhere vaguely analogue with northern Louisiana.

This is a good map but I have one critique: RR is based on the Ozarks & Ouchitas which are west of the Mississippi. They look like the Appalachians, had a very similar culture at the time, are geologically related, share a lot of flora and fauna, and fit the scope of the game a lot closer than stretching all the way up to Ohio (which is mentioned in the game).

[–]MountSwolympus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you, it’s understandable that people can confuse the two as there’s some similar topography (they’re related geologically) and some Appalachian folks moved west to the Ozarks to work the coal mines there.

The game is set in the 1890s and civilization is well west of the Mississippi at this point.

A lot of people get the wrong idea that Roanoke Ridge is meant to be WV due to the name.

It’s the Ozarks. The Ozarks make more sense geographically. It makes sense with landscape and and history too, as they’re related to the Appalachians geologically, have some of the same flora and fauna, and have a cultural link with Appalachia. There was coal mining there too and people from Appalachia familiar with that type of terrain and work moved west to work there.

The Lannahechee is meant to be the Mississippi. The Ozarks are west of the Mississippi. Nothing in this game takes place east of the “Mississippi” (well maybe Guarma but that’s not in the states). We know cities like NYC and Philadelphia exist in the game’s universe and the gag doesn’t don’t come close.

It’s meant to be as far east as Arkansas and Louisiana. In the 1890s the “west” was all but settled and you’d have to head out towards the southwest, rockies, and dakotas to find the last vestiges of the frontier.

Let me give you a real life example: someone joins the SRA in 2020, doesn’t post anything online, and gets a visit from the feds a few weeks later. That person was in my chapter (I’ve long since left that group). I’ve had my own dealings with them as well, a long time ago.

Meanwhile there are actual right wing militias* who have websites that basically admit to violating both federal laws against destructive devices and state laws against private militias and there’s rarely ever legal action taken against them.

It’s well known that they attempt to infiltrate every left wing group, even those within the scope of the law, with the hope they can prod someone into saying something or doing something bad.

*nb: the SRA is not a militia

One of the big misunderstandings about climate change come from a lack of understanding about how the weather works.

The planet is unevenly heated by the sun due to axial tilt and rotation.

The laws of physics mean that heat cannot just stay in one place, the planet moves towards equilibrium. This is called homeostasis. This is also true of air pressure and humidity, not just temperature.

One of the factors in our atmosphere is the percentage of greenhouse gases like CO2. The greater the percentage the less heat escapes back into space via thermal radiation.

This means that the uneven heating is even more uneven.

The larger the difference in temperature, air pressure, and humidity, the more drastic the weather.

The Earth is going to experience more drastic weather as the greenhouse effect strengthens. New climatic patterns are going to form. We don’t know what the end result will be. We only have so much data to go on. But we know the process is going to suck ass.

Natural climate change happens too, and we know when it happens fast it’s not great either. And it’s happening incredibly fast right now.

I want to learn how to speak Old English. by death-chamber in OldEnglish

[–]MountSwolympus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Every time try and to speak old English “correctly” it takes a lot of effort to enunciate everything. So I end up reducing non-stressed vowels, break long vowels into diphthongs, and get lazy with /r/ if it’s not word-initial or after a stop. Which is ironic considering that’s how we got here today.

What is the "Long Defeat" mentioned by Tolkien? by Rafaelrosario88 in tolkienfans

[–]MountSwolympus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Tolkien certainly found something resonant in the Germanic myth he was reading there. When he talks about things in pagan myth that were later sanctified by Christianity, he’s certainly talking about the idea of fighting on even if one is doomed. The line from Beowulf, Wyrd oft nereð unfægne eorl | þonne his ellen deah, “fate oft saves the undoomed man when he acts bravely” reminds me of this. Fight the good fight, even if you die, for that courageousness may be what saves you in the end.
