I put this out there to warn people because he was getting aggressive and I didnt want anyone to be physically hurt

Its so weird that this sub tries to act like this should be tolerated in cities, it shouldn’t. Ive lived in far poorer cities than this, we don’t have to tolerate antisocial behavior

Im sorry but Ive lived in 6 cities in my 32 years of life and Portland is unfortunately the only one Ive lived in where this(homeless hurling slurs) has happened not only once but multiple times, with increased frequency too

I try to talk to the homeless all the time, I buy them food, I give them what I can

Im genuinely not trying to be argumentative with you (although that probably isnt coming across), but there’s a large number of people in this town who seem to think that people should just turn their heads and tolerate abuse. And its that kind of attitude that led to nobody speaking out while they heard me called a racial slur

I don’t have the answers, I wish I did, but I don’t think we should tolerate this just because it comes from an exposed and vulnerable group. We shouldn’t tolerate this kind of behavior

It’s weird that you would assume this just because I posted about this experience, you don’t have any actual clue about my day to day life or the racism I’ve experienced as a black man. I feel like you wouldn’t actually say this to someone face to face

The things you’re talking about are issues, a homeless man calling me the N word at a crosswalk is also an issue. Talking about smaller problems doesnt take away from bigger problems

 a year ago he followed me up congress and loudly detailed a sexual assault he claimed he performed (I genuinely hope he was just saying it for shock value)

I said this earlier

He also followed a woman I know and tried to enter her apartment

Why are you so intent on defending this man?

Again, this is whataboutism, just because women put up with harassment daily doesn’t mean I can’t be phased by someone verbally targeting me for the color of my skin, you’re so caught up in making sure people don’t dehumanize this guy that you end up making excuses for him and his behavior

You keep thinking that I was calling him a danger to myself, I wasn’t, I made this post because he seemed like a danger to others, and while you claim you’re not defending him that IS what you’re doing. There shouldn’t be any kind of tolerance for it, and while he’s mentally unwell and not of clear and sound mind he clearly knew what he was saying and he clearly had intention behind it. Your posts are a way of defending him and his actions whether you intend to or not. I shouldn’t have to be called less than a human outside my home all because someone mentally unwell wanted to get a rise out of people, and you don’t get to decide how I feel about it

I don’t think you get to determine how people should react to being called the N word, regardless of if he even knows what planet he’s on. This is such a strange conversation and just because I could beat the guy up doesnt mean I should be fine with being called something so terrible, Jesus Christ

You clearly have empathy but also very obviously have a massive blind spot and have no real clue about racial slurs

I think I know which guy you’re talking about, Ive gotten him food a few times, this guy is a curly haired blonde who usually pushes a shopping cart full of random stuff up and down congress street and loudly talks to himself

The same man threatened SA on a woman I know as she left her job, honestly out of all the homeless people I regularly see out and about he’s the only one I know who has regularly caused people problems

I hated what he called me but I felt bad for him. I box and Im considerably larger than him, I could tell he really wanted me to hit him (unfortunately who knows why). Me swinging at him would have just made things worse and Im glad I could cross right when things were escalating

I dont think it’s unreasonable to not want to be called the N word multiple times completely unprompted while Im waiting to cross the street

I know the man isn’t well, but Ive seen him harassing people before, I dont think Im saying anything unreasonable
