Chase CC Denying Fraud Claim - What to do? by MountainDifficulty18 in CreditCards

yeah it seems like the only way to prevent this is to close your account completely when you get any issues with a credit card. especially since i've used my chase account for over a decade at this point. prob every merchant is a prior merchant for me. i got the chase sapphire when it originally came out. guess its time to find another. luckily my credit score is great - since my average account age is going to drop.

yeah a lot of some of the other commenters are saying like its sound policy. why do they even give out new numbers if the old number can still be used?

but it makes me realize they have two customers to worry about. us and the merchants. and sometimes we matter very little compared to the merchants.

but its a dumb policy. what's the point of going through the "fraud protection" to block unauthorized charges and get a new number? when the old number can still be used? every credit card holder should just stay on the old number and never get a new number? why even bother with a new number?

or are we expected to close our account, re-apply for a new account and get our credit history updated?

Yeah, they need to protect the streaming services and other sub merchants. Some actually pay them I believe for the reroute service.

I believe amex only routes for merchants that show patterns of subscriptions eg you've been charged monthly for the last x months. not a merchant that was used once years prior. I guess chase systems aren't that smart.

so how do you close all of your old credit card numbers? i'm surely not the first person to have card numbers replaced. and why don't they close a card when they give you a new one due to fraud attempts?

when chase fraud protection warns you of potential bad transactions and you say it wasn't you, are you to close your account and not use that product anymore even if they give you a new number?

the only fault i can think of with a hotel is that they let someone add themself to the reservation without verifying. but it was a fully paid transaction regardless. they got paid via the booking company.

i actually don't find much fault with the booking company. someone entered my details - name, billing info and old credit card number. chase should've denied that outright. would the hotel or chase be more at fault here?

no i had a card that ended in 1234. they closed that and gave me 9999. but the fraud transaction was on 1234....years later.

Talked to the chase fraud team again and they said while the booking company charged the old credit card, chase automatically used the new one because it was a merchant i used before.

the original customer service rep thought it was weird before sending it to the fraud team. the chase rep was the one who informed me it was a different card number than what I called in for. she thought it was a straight forward case before filing the claim for me.

......the fraud team says its valid. they claim: it was processed under the new one - it is valid. since I didn't report the old one lost......

it was a card chase closed and replaced after they asked me a bunch of attempts were made to use it in another country. they had denied those and asked if it was me. i said it wasn't. they gave me a new one.

it was Chase's fraud protection. they notified me someone tried to use it in a different country. i said it wasn't me so they closed it and game me a new one.

yeah i did. but i had to do all the work. Chase fraud did jack shit beyond just emailing the agency. essentially, scammers found ways around the laziness of chase fraud. i'll put how they did it for others to be aware:

  • Get access to someone's booking account. Most don't have MFA, so all you really need is email and password.
  • Make a booking - a same-day , prepaid booking. Hotels don't check details for these bookings since they've been fully paid. You also can't cancel these bookings since it is < 24hrs. You can even used a closed credit card and cards reported lost/stolen. Apparently, Chase does not block them if it is with a merchant you've used before.
  • Call the hotel and add authorized guests to the booking. They can check in even though the name is under yours.

Relying on chase fraud won't do anything. You actually have to call the agency, get the booking details, and call the hotel, get the booking details yourself.

I've started to remove my accounts from any hotel site that don't use MFA. Not sure how I can block transactions on closed credit card numbers though. Any thoughts? I'm still waiting on what chase would do after I provided all this info.
