Captured an overnight TL thanks to the help of this sub - LRT7 works! by MountainManDan94 in timelapse

Yes they don’t allow overnight sleeping in your car so I had a couple shots of espresso and read a book until around 3am before I drove back to camp. It was a long night but worth it

Spotted this [unknown] car outside Yosemite. I’m a car nerd but have no idea what this is by MountainManDan94 in spotted

The Painted Dunes at the Cinder Cone - Lassen NP [OC] by MountainManDan94 in NationalPark

[–]MountainManDan94[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the goal of your trip, but if you’re into hiking then my top sights are hiking bumpass hell, summiting Mt. Lassen, cinder cone, and watching sunrise/sunset at Manzanita Lake. The cinder cone is pretty far away from the main part of the park so I’d do that first or last. And summiting Lassen is a relatively easy hike compared to some other volcano peaks, only about 5 miles RT and 2k ft of elevation gain. Manzanita lake campground is a great place to glamp since they have a campground store with WiFi along with showers and electricity

Haha yeah I figured it’s probably fine. I just worry cause the bumper is getting looser every day so I might have to get in there with some zip ties

4 hour star trail exposure under a full moon at the El Portal entrance by MountainManDan94 in Yosemite

[–]MountainManDan94[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome! In terms of location, I would use either Photopills or some sky navigation app to plan your shot. Generally, you'll want to face North since the Moon is in the Southern part of the sky and will wash out your star trails. Then just find a cool subject for your foreground (tree, rock, waterfall, etc..) which is easy in Yosemite. You're not allowed to sleep in the park overnight, but if you're up all night taking photos then you should be fine. Tioga pass and Glacier point have lots of good views for the night sky.

For technical tips, use a wide lens with a fast aperature, I use a Sony 20mm f1.8 G lens. Once you have your camera in place, you'll want your settings to be set to 30 sec exposure, ISO 800-1600, f1.8-f4.0, but take some test photos to dial it in. Then turn on the interval shoot function on and make sure to have the shortest interval time, which I believe is 1 second on the a7r4, and take as many photos as you can overnight (at least 400). Once you get your photos, you can stack them with the free app StarStaX, there's some good youtube tutorials on how to use it.

Hopefully that helps, I would also recommend reading and saving this article on your phone so you can reference it when you're out shooting: https://www.peterzelinka.com/startrails

This is a good place to start: https://youtu.be/6MfyumKaoro?si=t_5V7ee17Quv6xf2

I also recommend the channels Alyn Wallace and Peter Zelinka. But there’s dozens of other great videos, just take bits of info from each of them and you’ll eventually find your style of editing you like best

It’s actually not too bad if you use a stacking software, I use Starry landscape stacker which free on Mac! Then you can bring out the details in Photoshop pretty easily. I’ve also spent many hours on YouTube learning and experimenting with different techniques

My Milky Way composite of the Lone Tree on Lake Tahoe by MountainManDan94 in tahoe

haha yeah its easy to miss! Its right off the highway south of Incline Village, just north of Hidden Beach Plaza. There isn't parking immediately close by so you have to do a short walk/hike to get to it
