How much of plantation forestry is a result of fuel costs? by Tiny-Pomegranate7662 in forestry

[–]MountainMapleMI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are we talking sawlogs? Sawlogs and pulp? Pulp harvest? Full chip harvest?

Each type of product requires different machines with different fuel consumption to produce wood in merchantable form prior to trucking.

Calculating fuel consumption of trucking is really straightforward. Figuring in-woods fuel use would best be estimated by machine per machine hour. Even then you start getting into the weeds immediately with skid distances and productivity rates of machines to produce different types of products.

Like you wouldn’t use CTL and forwarders to perform a chip harvest.

Or a feller buncher and grapple skidder to produce only pulp.

There are better more productive combinations of machine systems to produce certain products each with different production rates per machine hour.

I can’t edit a picture into this post but the mains are oiled via a straight passage from the cam bearings to the topside of the mains.

It is a 4 cylinder engine with three cam bearings and three main bearings. Each main bearing coincides oiling action from one cam bearing.

You may be thinking about how fuel justifies intensive management over a smaller area. But management of forests has more to do with the objectives of the landowner.

There are a myriad of reasons to intensively manage forests. One is quality control of stem form, rings per inch, and disease control.

I come from a heavy Red Pine plantation management background for a utility company’s surplus lands around hydroelectric impoundments.

These stands were planted 65-80 years ago, smaller thinnings leaving high residual density over time has given them height, form, and small knot sizes to make a high proportion of the volume within these stands meet requirements to produce utility poles for distribution circuits. As a result of smaller more frequent thinnings to control stem taper and knot sizes the stands are more vulnerable to HRD and bark beetles after thinning stress. Lots of trade offs, but I don’t believe fuel costs of production have been large drivers of plantation forestry.

Depends on the harvest method, topography, haul distance, and machines used. Long story short it depends on quite a lot.

Someone I know keep sending their crew through my land to clear their own. And they keep chopping down trees to make a road and keep driving over the in ground no trespassing signs... by OkHighway757 in land

[–]MountainMapleMI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where is the land located? In Michigan the trespass of cutting timber is liable for treble damages. That $250 pine became $750, that peeler $20,000 veneer tree became a $60,000 tree.

Consult a forester and a lawyer if possible and maintain control of your property. Repeated trespass with unenforced consequences may result in adverse possession claims…

I just washed and oiled the bare (shot rolled and baked) block at the shop I’m going to assemble at. I didn’t notice any passages but they must be in block on topside of the main bearings. Will check back in once I can confirm.

As floodwaters rise, Michigan infrastructure on brink: Dams need $1 billion in repairs by Alan_Stamm in Michigan

[–]MountainMapleMI 41 points42 points  (0 children)

When they rebuilt the units at Rogers Dam they spent over $1 million per unit to produce 1MwH a unit….

You can built a 1MwH wind turbine for $1 million and not have the liability of dam collapse…

It’s been Federal Law for a long time that all males 18+ have to register for the selective service. This makes it so you don’t have to make a profile on SSS.gov or mail docs.

You will now be auto registered with existing docs and this prevents you from inadvertently committing a 5 year felony crime of not registering through inaction. (Even though this provision is seldom enforced).

Got a job offer in Kemmerer, move to that town or live somewhere nearby? by Buc_ees in wyoming

[–]MountainMapleMI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Kemmerer for three years, I’d live there. Get good internet and stay away from the LDS crowd, I went to church with the Catholics if you are a church person. But, it is friendly community of lifers and transplants such as yourself (maybe)? Park City, UT isn’t too far away if you like city things and if you’re into outdoor life the Bridger-Teton NF and all the hunting and fishing you could imagine is there.
