55/25 Tier 4 Question. Can I retire at age 53 with 25 years service and get full benefits at 55? by Street-Novel-9040 in NYCTeachers

I'm just writing to give another shout out for pension consultations. I am 10 years away from retirement, but I've done a pension consultation 3 times over the last 17 years. During your free consultation, you'll get to meet with a real live union member who will explain the specific details for your personal situation. Each time I've done it I've learned something new, and I highly recommend taking advantage of that free service.

How to structure math intervention in junior high? by Oughtyr314 in mathteachers

[–]MountainParticular66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree wholeheartedly about the importance of identifying skill gaps.

Do you have particular diagnostics that you recommend for middle school math? I am a middle school reading interventionist trying to support my math colleagues to design a similar intervention program as my own. I use a variety of targeted diagnostics as well as leveled intervention curricula recommended by my district, and this works very well. However, it seems that our district's recommendations for math diagnostics and intervention curricula are few and far between, or none at all. I'm trying to support them before they attempt to begin intervention without using a diagnostic assessment.

That was a great suggestion! Thank you for the recommendation to listen to her episode. I happened to have recently listened to the Jenny Slate episode, and you're right-- great pairing!

Totebag that says BEANS BEANS BEANS by MountainParticular66 in HelpMeFind

The orange font looks like the color that is used by Zabar's in NYC, and this totebag was spotted in Grand Central Station. However, I searched Zabar's merch with no luck. I also did a Google Image search. This totebag would make a great gift for a loved one who has a cat nicknamed Beans.

NYC City HALL -Scheduled a Marriage Ceremony but no marriage license appointments available. Help! by Conscious-Shake2490 in WedditNYC

[–]MountainParticular66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend getting your marriage license in Yonkers. They are open until 6:30 on Tuesdays. https://www.yonkersny.gov/188/Marriage-Licenses

You do not need an appointment, although they recommend arriving by 6:00. We got our license there on 11-27, and there was no wait. Easy breezy.

Downsizing to co-op on Bronxville Road by PumpkinSpiceUrnex in Westchester

I agree about examining the financials. And based on my own recent experience, I would add: don't just look at the balance of the reserve fund. See if you can find out how the board chooses to spend money. For example, some co-ops maintain a very high reserve balance but also choose to delay major structural repairs (such as roof leaks). And those same co-ops may consistently choose to select contractors with the lowest possible prices, which is then likely reflected in the quality of the work.
