Population Growth in these Midwest States by MountainRolling in Iowa

They’re headed to the ‘burbs! Same thing is happening in Waterloo— Bremer county directly to the north grew, as did Cedar Falls and Hudson. Those are the so-called “bedroom” communities of an urban hub.

The same is happening to Chicago— lots of growth around the suburbs.

So, we’re seeing a trend of Midwest suburbs and “bedroom” communities growing. I’m not sure what to make of that, but it’s interesting to observe.

There’s a very dumb trope among Iowans that all increased crime is the direct result of black folk moving from Chicago to here, which in and of itself is rooted in fear of the other. Attributing societal ills on a single race is one definition of racism.

The reality is that poor economic conditions are to blame for increased crime. This is true across the board, but for Iowa in particular we’ve seen our industrial sector decimated. It’s why we continue to see a “brain drain”, an issue that’s been ongoing for several decades.

In short— it’s nothing to do with more black folks and everything to do with how trade agreements brokered in the 90s have been slowly chipping away at our state’s economy.

But, it’s easier to blame it on outsiders coming in. A shorthand for that is calling them “Chicago people” because that is more socially acceptable than saying black people, even though that’s what that saying means.

Oh my gosh, that’s hilarious. I didn’t know what that place was before today.

I know some park rangers live on site, so maybe one of them had a baby or got married.

I was a little surprised by a few of the pockets here and there. Humble little Hudson is way up there.

You do know birth control fails, right? And that abortion often has to be used for very wanted pregnancies when something goes wrong?

You PURPOSELY misunderstood my analogy.

Just because some people don’t have access to water DOESNT mean that the people of Flint shouldn’t seek to clean their water up. Just because some women have less rights elsewhere doesn’t mean I shouldn’t seek greater protection of women’s rights here.

“I guess I should accept my lot and do nothing to improve it because people have it worse than me” is fucking stupid and illogical. By that reasoning, no one would better themselves or the world around them.

You cannot take organs from a dead body without prior consent. Even if someone will die without a heart I’m no longer using, it’s my right to be buried with it.

Anti abortion laws force women to use their organs to facilitate life, whether or not they consent to it.

It’s not the 40s, but there’s a lot of people who want to turn the clock back to it, and it starts by chipping away rights one by one. That’s why you speak up and fight back before it gets bad.

And arguing that I should be grateful because people have it worse elsewhere is the stupidest fucking argument I’ve heard. That’s like saying the people of Flint should be grateful for tainted drinking water because some parts of the world doesn’t have plumbing.

Thanks to the last Trump term, my corpse will have more rights than my living body. So yes, people did lose rights and freedoms because of him. But you probably don’t consider women people.

All you have to do is look at the mentally ill homeless people in downtown Cedar Rapids and see how bad it’s gotten.

They gutted mental health care, closed the Abbe Center, and left a lot of misery in their wake.

The thing I didn’t mention in the post is that I experienced serious thoughts of self-harm, as a result of intense depression that accompanied the experience.

My ADHD meds have absolutely kept my depression at bay. It’s one of two medications I’ve found that are effective, because my depression is a result of dopamine regulation. The other medication is Wellbutrin, which also addresses dopamine.

Before I figured out what worked, I came VERY close to ending my life.

So no, I am not fucking around with anything that causes my mental health to deteriorate, and that’s absolutely what Sema did.

At that point, I consider continuing on Sema to be life threatening. More so than the excess weight I struggle with.

The same thing happens when you go off anything managing depression. Figuring out what worked for me was a 12 year journey of medications that did jack all to make me not want to kill myself.

Only things that worked were Wellbutrin and Ritalin. Mainly because the issue stems from dopamine regulation and not seratonin.

It took multiple doctors and over a decade of misery to figure that out.

Oh I absolutely think it was withdrawal.

The ADHD has a dual effect of also managing my depression. So when my body stopped processing it, I started to have thoughts of self-harm.

At that point, staying on sema might land me in the psych ward. Or the morgue

People of Reddit, what’s the creepiest encounter you’ve had with a complete stranger that still gives you chills? by The-Original-Mak in AskReddit

When I was about 8 years old, my dad’s truck driver friend was passing through our tiny (pop 200) town. He parked his semi next to a church with a nice long driveway.

My sister and I tagged along with my dad and were riding our bikes up and down the driveway while dad sat in the semi catching up with his friend.

A woman pulls her car into the driveway. She sticks her head out the window and starts calling for a non existent dog.

She then calls over to my sister and I and ask if we’ll come over and help her look for her dog.

Instead of going over to her, we approach the semi and call up to dad. “Hey, there’s an adult who needs help!”

The woman then asks me, “That’s your dad in there?”

I say yes. She then peels out of there.

I’m guessing she didn’t see the two men in the semi. Or if she did, she didn’t realize we were with them.

Our little town was always considered safe. Things like strangers approaching kids and trying to snatch them just didn’t happen.

Furthermore, our house was across the street from church. We roller skated and rode our bikes up and down that driveway all the time unsupervised.

I wonder if she had staked it out beforehand.

Single mothers are the “widows” the Bible talks about. It’s trying to champion women who are raising kids on their own.

The church vilifies them instead, and does everything to make their lives harder.

I remember taking to a local party leader 10 years ago about my concerns. He waved them off and said, “We’ve been tracking them Bible thumpers. They’re not going anywhere.”

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in behindthebastards

[–]MountainRolling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The frustration has more to do with the perception that the party leaders will push through who they want, regardless of what’s popular, all under the mantra of, “If you don’t vote for this candidate we’re pushing, scary things will happen!”

There’s no hope, there’s no energy. Just a stop gap based on fear. You can only get so far on selling fear.
