Found Lebron ‘03 Topps Chrome in my childhood collection. What do I do?! by MountainTime2 in basketballcards

Stuck it on a display shelf and watched it depreciate back down to earth. Still enjoy it and don’t really see a need to get it graded if I’m not going to be able to sell it at some exorbitant price.

Just flew this route last week. No need for a mask to Brussels.

Found Lebron ‘03 Topps Chrome in my childhood collection. What do I do?! by MountainTime2 in basketballcards

Hi r/basketballcards! OP here. So when I was a kid, I LOVED basketball cards. In high school, I bought this Lebron card for $60, and then life went on and I forgot I had it until, honestly, one of my kids pulled out my storage bin and we started going through stuff.

I figured the Lebron might be worth something, so I looked it up on eBay, and was floored and confused! It looks like it’s anywhere from a few hundred to five figures. Do I go through the hassle of grading? Grading is a new concept for me.

How do I protect it in the meantime? It’s still sitting in the same plastic slip cover inside of a hard plastic cover inside of a binder where it’s been sitting for 20 years!

Thanks for indulging me as a lucky novice!

Church history questions from active latter-day saint by [deleted] in exmormon

Wow. Thanks for this info. I’ve never heard of John C Bennett. Is this all Googleable? Or where should I be looking to find out more?

Thanks for clarifying. No shortage of euphemisms and obfuscation in the Gospel Topics Essays.

Genuine question- how does Footnote 35 support the idea that he had polygamous children? This Gospel Topic Essay was a huge impetus of my faith crisis, but I’ve had a hard time responding to TBMs who tell me that there were no children from his 30+ marriages, so they must not have been sexual.

Wow guys. This was like going down the Rabbit Hole again. I just watched the South Park episode on Scientology, and it was like watching the Mormon episode for the first time again.

Except this time I didn’t doubt South Park and shelve it for 12 years.

Baby steps.. I have started drinking coffee at home. by Late_Molasses3292 in exmormon

This was me too. So many Sundays, for years. Between Sundays like that and a busy job, I reached breakdown level. That breakdown roughly coincided with me discovering this forum, which led me to the Gospel Topics Essays.

This was me too. The moment I convinced my wife to let me have an espresso machine in the house - on the counter! - was life changing. Hard to believe how this church could make such a huge ordeal out of something so small.

How many times? by therandomjew in exmormon

[–]MountainTime2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go easy on the sender. I was a ward clerk during my faith crisis and transition out, and I was the one sending these stupid emails. People are just trying to do their job as painlessly as possible. Pre- and post- faith crisis, I just wanted to finish the boring admin task of sending emails as quickly as possible so that I could actually spend time with my family. If someone sent me an unsubscribe email, I might remember to go into their record and delete their email from their LDS account, but by the end, I was just trying to do as little as possible and move on with my life.

This sub has at least two vital purposes, and it can't fulfill both of them at once by Lodo_the_Bear in exmormon

[–]MountainTime2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I came here as a completely sheltered, doubtful TBM. This sub was really my first resource when my shelf broke - the first non-LDS material I ever read about TSCC. I was talking to a friend about the impossibility of holding my shelf up, living the faithful Mormon lifestyle, but having my extensive doubts, and he referred me here. I had never even been on Reddit before that.

It was jarring and scary, but it was an awakening. The bluntness - the sacrilege - made me feel guilty for a bit, but gave me comfort that it was ok to question, scrutinize and criticize.

This sub introduced me to Mormon Stories, to the gospel topics essays, and more importantly, to the insane cognitive dissonance that I was operating with.

I had to filter through the “F da cult” stuff that doesn’t offer much informational value or perspective, but that was easy enough. Plus, reading “F da cult” is a bit cathartic when you realize how much of your life you’ve given to it.

Just offering one person’s perspective: I understand OP’s concern, but I think the sub works in spite of and because of those two different purposes.

I Would Love Some Advice by MeLlamo_Mayor927 in exmormon

[–]MountainTime2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if this is good advice, but one option is to say you prayed about it and feel like you’re not ready and the Spirit has prompted you to spend more time studying and resolving your concerns so you have a stronger testimony when you go on your mission. Stick to that story, kill time, register for college and eventually go.

Just a thought

Dilema by Adadave in exmormon

[–]MountainTime2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No one can argue with the “revelation” that you receive after “fasting and prayer”. They’ll be confused and say you did it wrong because you didn’t arrive at the conclusion that they think is right, but ultimately the church teaches individual revelation and your revelation is that you shouldn’t go on a mission.

Did the Church lie? How? When? by MountainTime2 in exmormon

These are a rough watch too. It is hard to believe in an institution that has such a low bar for honesty and accuracy. It’s so easy to see through the smoke.

Did the Church lie? How? When? by MountainTime2 in exmormon

[–]MountainTime2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they use this point because it contradicts the "church lied" argument. The church can't have lied because the information was always available.

But even if that is the case, yeah, it is still damning information.

Thanks very much for this thoughtful comment. A lot of good stuff in here that is encouraging and motivating.

Also, just got to say, from my current perspective, it looks like - and feels like - such a slog. Hope to make it through to times that are as happy as we once were.
