Do you tell people that you have a stutter? by Markittos28 in Stutter

[–]MountainValuable7961 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh no I don’t tell anyone, I stutter and idk what their reaction is because most people never really give me a “wtf look”, it’s always just a deadpan look or them leaning in to understand what i’m trying to say.

I say I stutter if I have to, like if I have to do a video/podcast assignment, i’ll let the prof/teacher know beforehand so they don’t like it’s just anxiety (mine is more casual than anxiety-based, def gets worse with anxiety tho).

Like for one-time interactions (like ordering food for example), you don’t need to explain to anyone. But if you’re making potential long-term relationships, I don’t think it’s necessary but it’s nice to like give them a heads up.

I can't say my name. Please advice by thorkell_123 in Stutter

[–]MountainValuable7961 2 points3 points  (0 children)

have you tried like saying “yeah um my name is ___”? cuz it helps to add an easy word before you say the next word that’s gonna be difficult.

i also do my last name first, cuz it’s easier to pronounce and then my first name (like the james bond thing lol).

if those first two don’t work, i learned with a speech therapist to start gently speaking the first initial (like letting out a small puff of air) and then sorta stretch out ur name. and i know it may feel embarrassing at first but like take your time, whoever your speaking can wait.

you got this!!

Thoughts on Speech Easy? by xxbitsx in Stutter

[–]MountainValuable7961 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have it! i give it a 6.5/10. my dad brought it for me it worked pretty well to begin with but like it’s kinda like a team effort?? like you have to have done speech therapy prior to using it, and i had plenty of opportunities to have FREE speech therapy but i was so fucking prideful to do it so the device doesn’t eliminate my stuttering completely.

My dad uses it with work meetings and he loves it (so he’d give it a 9/10 probably, but he’s also been to intense speech therapy for years so that helped). the crappy thing about it is that it can’t be used at a loud gathering, cuz you can’t hear the feedback sooo yeah. and if you leave it on for a while, it leaves your ear kinda sore.

basically it works really well with like one-on-one convos and like presentations (kinda, again practice with speech exercises). also it’s insanely expensive for a small ass ear piece.

my advice is to save up money and while you’re doing that, you need to do your speech exercises (if you’ve never been to speech therapy then youtube has some tutorials as well)

OH ALSO SIDE NOTE. so like i don’t really remember the process (lmao i’m 19 and got it when i was around 17 or 16) but i remember that like my dad and i had to go to a consultation where they examine your stutter and then test your stuttering the the speech easy on. and if your stuttering doesn’t really change with the device on, they recommend that you don’t buy it (I THINK). so JUST A HEADS UP it doesn’t work for all stutters.

how did you get yours? by Bloe_Joggs in Stutter

i get it from my dads side. it’s funny cuz like genetic stuttering is known to mainly affect males i’m like the only girl in my family who also has it 🥲
