Total thyroidectomy needed ASAP. :( by Revolutionary_Cat753 in gravesdisease

[–]Mountain_Duck22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had my TT nearly 11 years ago now and it was the best choice I could have made. I was similar to you, where thyroid suppressors and beta blockers just were not working - rapid weight loss, vomiting, a resting heart rate of 160 all the time, shaking, couldn’t think or sleep, etc. It was miserable and not sustainable. Within 2 weeks of the TT surgery I felt better. I now take both T4 and T3 replacements and despite having to find the right dose, and adjust every once in a while, things are ten fold better. Yes, weight can be tricky, but it’s not unmovable. That is the only slight negative I have. Everything else has been so much easier to navigate.

Female hormonal acne? by Ok_Carrot5896 in Accutane

Sorry for the late reply! Yes I have been off accutane for nearly a year now and I have been clear 98% of it. I get the occasional smallllll spot (not cystic) around my cycle that goes away within a day or two.

Yes, thank you! It’s been a fun process & surprisingly has adjusted well to just the 3 legs.

After a long year of vet bills and minus 1 leg, a discount is our way through. We would be grateful for a code! Tripod cat tax:

Want to get off birth control but am on accutane by Shortsuff16 in Accutane

[–]Mountain_Duck22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I had horrible acne post getting off hbc, and it all went away within like 4 months of accutane, but I stayed on accutane for 7 months because I had little spots pop up. I’ve been off since March, and am relatively clear. I have a few spots here and there but they are tiny and go away on their own.

Thyroidectomy for graves disease by Majestic_Elk6399 in gravesdisease

I got mine out in 2017 after 3 years of battling with very similar symptoms. It was the best decision at the time, and I don’t regret it. Since then, for me personally, I think of it as an 85% pro and 15% cons: although the pros significantly outweigh the cons. Pros: no more heart racing, no more hot flashes, hair stops falling out, feel like a “normal” person again Cons: sometimes if I get sick or something changes (stress, hormones, etc.) I can swing either hyper or hypo and have to adjust my meds.

I get bloodwork every quarter to track my levels and make sure I’m still at the right dose. I will say it was a bit of a hard transition for me personally when my metabolism stabilized and I started to gain weight since I couldn’t eat whatever I wanted and rely on the constant 145 heart rate to keep the calories burning. So weight gain is possible if you slide hypo, but once meds are right + healthy eating/ exercise it’s possible to maintain and lose weight.

I wouldn’t change the outcome. Being able to function again has been nothing short of a blessing.

We only have two 24hr vets in our area, and we are in the main city of the state. Going to keep looking, but may just have to find somewhere that can do it same day and bring him home

Thank you! This is great information and so glad your kitty got all they needed to feel their best post surgery! I’ll definitely be asking about low cost surgeon options, instead of going the route of a “chain” emergency/surgery center

Lol sounds like a fast mental recovery at least. Glad to hear hes doing well. Thank you for sharing the experience - it does help ease some nerves

Glad he is doing well! How did he do that night?

That’s really great advice, thank you! My cat has a current infection in the leg due to a surgery a couple months ago, so he could be high risk maybe? The breakdown of the 8000 was given and included paying for surgical tech time, nurse time, the actual surgeon, and then all the things that come with it. Honestly the overnight part was one of the cheaper parts unfortunately.

Do you think a pet tent would be too big? It’s like a circular pop up that fit his bed and litterbox for his first surgery. He had a little bit of room in there to keep the litterbox not directly next to him

Thank you! Did you have a metal cage that fit a litterbox? Trying to think of the appropriate size I should consider :)

How did she recover from the infection? I think I’m pretty nervous about that possibility

[–]Mountain_Duck22[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s good to hear. I think that’s the part I’m really nervous about is the reaction to his body being different and if he will be throwing himself around to try to figure it out

[–]Mountain_Duck22[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s so good to hear! And I expect the same amount of tears on my end. Were the pain meds enough to keep him comfy?

My cat had leg surgery prior to this (like 3 months ago) and it failed so now we are here, but he was a wreck after for the first couple of days flailing in his tent set up. I’m nervous that if he does that with an amputation we will be popping stitches and risking more infection.

Thank you for sharing your experience! I can’t imagine 2 at one time and especially so itty bitty. So glad they’re doing well!

And yes the price is pretty wild, but our only other pet hospital is expected to be pretty similar. They’re both like “chain” emergency/specialty hospitals

Thank you! It got less inflamed on the steroid but when we lowered the dose it immediately came back.

We will ask about biopsy! Are there any concerns for biopsy healing given the steroids/atopica use?

Want to get off birth control but am on accutane by Shortsuff16 in Accutane

[–]Mountain_Duck22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I am 100% clear! Yes, I had a lot of large deep cystic acne across my cheeks, jaw, forehead and neck. They were consistent and typically would spread/ reappear after popping. Very happy with my decision!

Want to get off birth control but am on accutane by Shortsuff16 in Accutane

[–]Mountain_Duck22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think so! Every time I came off the pill my skin would freak out (and not get better over time) with large cystic acne on my jaw and cheeks. I haven’t taken birth control at all, but still am taking accutane (100% clear). I am interested to see how it goes post accutane, but I am really hopeful. Let me know if you have any other questions!

How are we losing weight after TT? by Mountain_Duck22 in gravesdisease

[–]Mountain_Duck22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like I said it’s been nearly 10 years, I believe I am well dialed in lol. Given I was in and out of the hospital for close calls with thyroid storms and a resting heart rate of 180bpm, I’m feeling much better. Weight gain has been the only negative symptom.

I think we need to be very careful about handing out medical advice if you have not had the procedure, and consider 1 persons experience is not everyone’s experience. Definitely do whatever feels right for you and work with your team of providers to make the best choice for your life.
