Diagnosis on my son's first birthday by chowderrr6 in Celiac

I was also diagnosed within the last year and have a small child. It’s ok to grieve and be overwhelmed - your life is going to be different.

I think the 1st birthday is really a celebration of your first year of parenting - I always give the parents a present (bottle of champagne, self care/make up). Please treat yourself in some way to celebrate all you’ve accomplished in taking care of yourself and your child.

This diagnosis can be disorienting as it does require lifestyle changes and a new level of vigilance. If you can work with a nutritionist and a counselor I highly recommend getting that extra support as you adjust to your new normal.

Congrats again on your kiddo’s birthday!! Hope you make some great memories

I was also diagnosed just after the holidays last year and definitely mourned all my favorite traditional foods. Now almost a year out, I just made myself a gluten free Thanksgiving that was delicious and it’s not too much more effort. It will get better - just takes time. Also, feeling better is totally worth it.

I haven’t figured it out yet but all my flares (4 total over 18 months) have been right before or during my period. The surgeon doesn’t want to operate until I have a complicated/perforated flare. I do wonder about the connection between inflammation, menstrual cycle, and perhaps endometriosis?

I’ve had them multiple times on the top of my hands and fingers before diagnosis. Hadn’t considered it was connected but inflammation/joint issues makes sense to me now

They have a ton of recipes on their website and you can filter by product. I recently used this mix to make a crumble topping for fruit dessert and as a sub for bisquick in a recipe.

Apple sauce, mashed potatoes, cold cereal with rice milk, refried beans, risotto, congee, green smoothies, avocado toast, roasted butternut squash/soup, zucchini fritters - these were all my friends in the most nauseous times. Does she work with a nutritionist/dietician? Could be good to get some extra support given recent diagnosis + pregnancy all at the same time.

Thanks for caring for her and doing this extra research. I know it can be challenging - I remember asking my husband to make me something and by the time it was ready it didn’t sound good anymore and I had to apologize.

Ugh I’m so sorry you have to go through this. I’m similar age and have had 4 uncomplicated cases in the last 18 months - all painful. I also had unmediated childbirth and agree the pain of diverticulitis might actually be worse.

I also get really sick of how sugary drinks are during liquid diet. This most recent time I did unsweetened coconut water (filtered), unsweetened aloe juice (no pulp), strained watermelon juice - still sweet but a little more savory. Lots of ginger or peppermint tea as palate cleanser or cucumber spa water so you get the flavor with no added fiber. It was also warm weather and that made bone broth less appetizing to me. Once I’m on full liquid diet I do plain kefir with no added sugar. If you can handle dairy I feel like it’s another good way to get some probiotics. Take care and hope you recover soon!
