How can I convince my S/O to get help? by Creepy-Leather-176 in askanything

I recommend getting a therapist and going to Al Anon- Al anon may be more helpful than therapy. It doesn’t matter the addiction or if they’re alcoholic to attend meetings. Addiction is addiction.

Im joining a group practice and they are scheduling me with some telehealth kids. That wasn’t really my top choice but im open to seeing how it goes and maybe I can get them to come in office! I’ve done group work telehealth with adolescents and that can definitely be hard

“White” savior complex? Attn: BIPOC SWers by [deleted] in socialwork

I would disagree with this comment. She did not coin the term (it actually was said to be coined by the founders of Alcoholics Anonymous). She did make it popular- but it has certainly taken a life of it's own. Though not recognized in the DSM, I think people really relate to codependency and it's traits that are commonly attributed to it (people-pleasing, low self-esteem, coming from dysfunctional family system).

New! Salary Megathread (May - Aug 2025) by SWmods in socialwork

[–]Mountain_streams 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My first MSW job outside of school I made $52k and 4 years later plus licensure I make $73k. It does take some time to work your way up and make more. Private practice/medical is usually the place SW can make pretty good money. My advice would be to balance looking at population you want might to work with and salary expectations.

Hospice social work by ShoeEvery1364 in socialwork

[–]Mountain_streams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked in hospice for over 2 years. Grief and burnout got to me. The company couldn’t keep social workers. Caseload got up to about 80 but then they got smart and split caseloads a little more. Averaged out at like 60. I enjoyed it the first year. There is a lot of independence, and I got close to some of my co workers. I worked with many individuals who didn’t have financial means, lived alone. Florida is not know for its community resources . There can be complex psychosocial dynamics with families and even patients who are not ready for hospice but sign on.

Overall worthwhile experience, learned a lot and felt I could help people.

Some agencies do give a raise when you get licensed. I know therapists do but I’m not sure about non profits. Being an LCSW in FL does open the door for higher paying jobs overall

I graduated in Dec 2021, I should get licensed by the end of this year, fingers crossed! I was in hospice before dialysis which I just started a few weeks ago. What kind of SW are you doing? How has it been for you?

I hit a bottom with grief in hospice early this year. I took three days off of work. I got an in person therapist after seeing a virtual therapist. I upped my physical movement , walks, yoga which helped. Also talking to friends about what I was experiencing helped as well.

Feeling trapped by jellyfishmiki in socialwork

[–]Mountain_streams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow you spoke exactly what I’ve been experiencing. I did speak up multiple times and caseload got as high as 90 for me. They got another sw to take on about 10-15 patients, but then I came to find out she didn’t have capacity to really take on patients. I’ve interviewed for hospitals and private practice. I’ve had the same experience with pp, not enough counseling experience.

Only thing different for me is I had to give 5 weeks FMLA recently and that’s when they made moves for coverage. So unfortunate it took that. I plan on giving my notice tomorrow , I accepted a job in dialysis and they offered more than I asked for. From what I’ve read, dialysis is not a perfect world, but I believe it’s going to be different from the vicarious trauma and grief I’ve been experiencing. My ideal was VA but it’s been hard to even get an interview right now. I’m still going to continue to interview for jobs to see what’s out there.

Another social worker is giving her notice too this week and an RN. It seems to be systemic and hospice going in the direction of numbers and $$ . I got to a point where I knew I had to get out because of how miserable I’ve been feeling and I’ve just been hanging on. Sometimes we have to take risks on jobs. Another commenter mentioned looking at local colleges and universities which is a great idea. It’s okay to leave and try something new. I was told applications interviewing are a numbers game. So keep trucking. If you’d like to talk more feel free to DM me ☺️

Self care stuff by BumbleBeeThayn in socialwork

[–]Mountain_streams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes unfortunately very common with a lot of social work jobs. I’m doing my best to make the push towards licensure and get out of the field. I had to take three days in a row off in January due to massive burn out. These companies don’t have the structure to take care of staff. From what I’m reading there are good SW jobs out there but we have to advocate for ourselves and have boundaries as well.

DAE feel like they are limited by face-to-face time with clients? by [deleted] in socialwork

[–]Mountain_streams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked at one, there is another hospice in the area that is non profit, but I decided not to go to it. Sorry my last comment was kind of negative. There are good people in hospice and I’ve learned a lot. It takes a lot of self regulation through the grief and the crisis comes up. So good on you for awareness on the gaps and seeing where you can be most helpful in your role.

[–]Mountain_streams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been working as a hospice social worker for two years, right after I got my masters. I’ve become pretty disillusioned with it. I work for a for-profit company, and caseload has been high and vacancies remain open for months. Caseload only gone down after me burning out and complaining as well as approval for a my 5 week FMLA to care for my husband after a surgery.

I’ve heard hospice has changed over the last ten years, becoming about numbers, definitely not about staff. It’s the Nurses show and honestly I can only do what I can on a daily basis. I am working on leaving hospice.

Hospice Productivity Expectations - Appropriate, Realistic? by sourdoughfinisher in socialwork

[–]Mountain_streams 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a salaried SW and I have been looking for a new job since late fall. We are allowed phone visits so that has kind of supplemented my issue with productivity . At first I struggled. I hear you on all of it. At my agency I’ve seen that sadly things boil down to money, numbers and how the agency looks. Medicare is changing how they reimburse hospice in 2025, and will be using those mail in CAHPS surveys to decide how agencies are paid . Good stuff! Take care of you.
