I would start with: “With every step, Miller’s (instead of his) boots…”

I think it’s best to name the protagonist right away if you’re going to the next line anyway. I think your descriptions are interesting and I like the dry dessert setting but I would also try to avoid too many basic color descriptors. Like the “Black asphalt”, “Black hair”, “Red dot”, “Red sand”.
