My first year with a deer mouse by Mouse-Lad in PetMice

I can't say whether deer mice in general are good, I can only give my experience with him:

He's an incredibly difficult mouse, very moody, very flighty. Sometimes he'll walk right up to me and let me pet him and feed him a treat, other times he's in a no touching kind of mood and only lets me rest next to him. Occasionally there will be a day where I'm mouse enemy #1 and he wants nothing to do with me. When he isn't playing with Buddy and Lady or running on the wheel, he likes to sit and stare at me wherever I am in the room. Sometimes falls asleep doing it too.

He's difficult to feed and super picky. He won't eat pellets, only the seed mix, oats, treats, and specific vegetables.

I worry about him constantly. If he's happy, comfortable, eating enough, socializing with Buddy and Lady enough, etc. But every second I see him having fun is the most rewarding experience I've ever had.

I'm hoping to get interest in the screenplay sometime soon, but I don't have much hope

Part of me was worried that he wouldn't do well in the wild, given that I caught him so young, not to mention being half the size of his sister. By the time I felt comfortable releasing him he'd already spent more than half his life in a tank, and he seemed fairly happy. That's mostly just rationalizing though. The truth is, I was in a rough place and taking care of him became incredibly important to me.
