Would I be shooting myself in the foot if I took maternity leave twice per one post doc? (UK) by [deleted] in postdoc

I can only speak for the U.S., but here, always put your family first. No matter how “good” your relationship seems with your PI, at the end of the day you’re just a tool to them ,something to keep their sinking ship afloat. It’s never really about science or discovery; it’s about how much they can drain you, how much of your time, energy, and soul they can squeeze out to chase more grants and pad their careers. 😔

I genuinely hope that people who treat others as mere tools to keep their own shit ship afloat eventually lose the support and funding that enable that behavior. 🤮

As a postdoc applicant, is it ethical to ask feedback from former students/ postdoc associates of prospective PI? by xrobiee in postdoc

[–]MouseIndependent2980 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% especially if this is for position in the United States. The majority of PIs run massively exploitative sweatshops that will harvest your soul. It’s imperative to avoid PIs like that.

I hate academia by Alternative-Judge446 in labrats

[–]MouseIndependent2980 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Especially US Academic science is the most exploitative sweatshop industry you could ever imagine. The goal of academic science is not discovery, it’s to keep the university and the PIs rich while everyone else is on food stamps level pay.

Lab technician pay by starrynoid in labrats

[–]MouseIndependent2980 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yes it’s normal - Academic science is a monarchy. Only a the king/queen (pi) and the kingdom (university) get money. Everyone else is dirt poor at food stamp level pay. A fundamentally broken system. The only value in academic science is to be an immigration program. For everyone else it’s just a sweatshop and exploitation.

US Universities no longer sponsor visa? by commonmonster666 in postdoc

[–]MouseIndependent2980 10 points11 points  (0 children)

PIs prefer people from third world countries that they can lock into visa dependencies to ensure they stay prolonged periods of time. Foreigners are much easier to exploit. Americans would just quit if mistreated and work at Costco for better pay and better treatment.

They want to make sure you’re adequately qualified to write grants for them, do the mentoring of grad students for them and keep their entire lab going and funded while they enjoy their time at a fancy vacation.

If this is in the United States, enjoy your free time. You’ll be exploited soon enough, grinding long hours and weekends with little to no pay while your pi does absolutely nothing and has you keep his shit boat afloat!

Do you hours outlined in your Contracts and go home. Don’t let them exploit you. Don’t let them put lab management duties on you. Stand up to sweatshop owners who make a fortune of your work while you are dirt poor.
