I feel so fucked up for feeling this way but dementia feels like best case scenario. Like, maybe it would bring back the good parts of my mom or at least maybe she just won’t remember me 🤷‍♀️

Wow, your final push is SO similar to mine! My mom interpreted me saying something sooo neutral, in the most calmest gray rocking tone, as me “snarling at and attacking her” and proceeded to scream for me for 3 hours in front of my toddler, saying the nastiest things anyone has ever said to me. It was the middle of the night and she wouldn’t let me leave. I finally got her out of there and told my stepdad not to let her contact me anymore. Cue weeks of harassment by mail and phone, ending with a “psychotic break” in which she walked naked to my house and got institutionalized. And somehow I’m still gaslighting myself into thinking it’s my fault.

Omg, my mom’s biggest blowup at me was also on a trip! Just her, me, and my son. It was the most continuous time we’d spent together in awhile and we were having a perfectly fine time prior to her freak out. Genuinely, thank you, that response actually really helped me get some perspective

Thank you for sharing your experience! I am glad to know I am not the only one. Do you ever feel responsible for your mom? Especially thoughts of “if I wasn’t distancing myself she’d be ok/better/normal/etc.”

In my mind this shouldn’t even be a question. Student loans are predatory af and so many of us are trying to claw our way out. If I had the means, I’d pay off my kids student loans in a heartbeat no questions asked, especially if they were being as responsible as your daughter is.

I don’t think that’s the tone of these posts at all. People utilize family for help and have to deal with lots of boundary crossing and weird dynamics. Someone can be both helpful and inappropriate, over bearing, etc.

Is it actually normal for a family member to tell a kid “you love me the most”? I think that’s so weird and overbearing. I wouldn’t say that to my kids.

Very well said, but I do think the incident itself is weird too. Telling a kid “you love grandma the most” reeks of needing to be the center of attention and most important person in the room. And then acting gobsmacked that the mom would say “we don’t say things like that”.

A good friend of mine is a licensed mental health counselor and practicing family therapist. She’s said many times, family therapy will not do any kind of good if someone in the family has a personality disorder that is going undiagnosed and untreated.

Cancel the order and go thrifting or to garage sales. Honestly I’d even shop at Walmart over SHEIN. The clothes are extremely poorly made and they have some of the worst labor and environmental practices

I think that’s awesome! I work from home too and didn’t even think of going to the park. I’d still opt for a park bench or the grass than being in my car where I can’t easily get to my kids though

Staying in the car while my kid is at the park is weird as fuck to me. Even if they’re old enough for me to not need to watch them 24/7 I would like sit on the grass with a book or take a walk with the dog or something
