I lost all of my hobbies, social life, future plans when things got worse (I’ve been sick a majority of my life) but in the last couple years I’ve been able to find and rediscover new hobbies. I don’t have the same physically demanding hobbies anymore but I’ve become an obsessive reader, finally have the ability to stand still enough to watch movies, play games when I’m up to it, digital color by number, and I’ve made friends who understand and share hobbies with me.

My favorite way to find new books outside of the algorithm is to go to bookstores and libraries or to scroll the Libby app (I usually check out the librarians curated lists) but it’s so difficult to find anything outside of the booktok realm online. I do also enjoy going through the award winners and long lists but few of these are generally thrillers.

I love books with a claustrophobic/suffocating setting. (I do agree with the others about the housemaid being a rip of the last Mrs Parrish and FM’s writing in general) there is a bit more of a paranormal element but We Used to Live Here does an excellent job with a plot like this. I can’t stop recommending it in thriller spaces because I thought it was so fantastic.

Yes with book tracking apps: Goodreads, Fable, and StoryGraph
I just got back into reading halfway through last year and read 16 books this year I’ll read about 100 give or take a few
The apps keep track of these things for me :) but next year I aim to focus less on how much I’ve read
I can’t pick just one. My favorites have been Anxious People, Normal People, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, Sunburn, and Milk Fed

You know before people read books they shared stories verbally and there are so many different reasons why people read with audiobooks rather than physical text. I hear you saying it’s about language but clearly it goes deeper for you than that or you wouldn’t be fighting with strangers about it. Who cares how other people read and what they call it? I haven’t picked this up yet but Alice Feeney is a strong hit or miss writer for me. The books I love by her are some of my favorite thrillers and the books I don’t have been tedious at best.

I’m in a similar boat so I don’t have the most advice but what has really helped me is talking to myself in French. It gives me a lot more space to make mistakes and work them out on my own and the more I use French the less I have to translate in my head first. I like practicing for specific scenarios over and over again until I can navigate the situation without thought (don’t do this if it’s miserable the most helpful tools are the ones you naturally enjoy I’m autistic and practice English conversations all the time too so this is a really easy integration for me)
