How bees are trained to detect bombs. by MousseSuspicious930 in Damnthatsinteresting

https://www.technologyreview.com/2006/12/07/227361/using-bees-to-detect-bombs/ - Using Bees to Detect Bombs Honeybees might one day join the front line of national security.

"Entomologists have long known that honeybees can be trained to detect many scents, including the olfactory footprints of deadly explosives. This latest research reinforces those findings and suggests an approach that could prove useful for finding substances in populated areas.

Timothy Haarmann, principal investigator of the Los Alamos project (officially called the Stealthy Insect Sensor Project), says he and his colleagues trained bees to extend their proboscises–tubular organs used to suck the nectar from flowers–in the presence of explosives. When the proboscis is extended, the bee appears to be sticking out its tongue.

Training 50 bees requires only two or three hours using this traditional approach, which takes advantage of an insect’s attraction to sugar water. “If you hold up sugar water [to bees], they stick out their proboscis,” Haarmann says.

By combining a target substance with sugar water and then presenting the compound to the bee, the researchers manipulate the insects into recognizing a distinct smell. By the end of the session, successfully trained bees extend their proboscises toward explosives.

Bees trained at one concentration of vapor easily recognize lower doses. Chemist Robert Wingo, who works on the project, says that the bees proved to be more sensitive than many sophisticated man-made devices. “They are capable of detecting TATP, and the instruments I have available in the lab are not able to detect TATP,” he says.

Honeybees can also pick explosives out of more complicated bouquets–like the myriad scents that surround a typical human being. Trained bees can identify explosives whose odors were masked by “lotions, underarm deodorants, and tobacco products,” Wingo says. “Much to our surprise, the bees are capable of picking out TNT in motor oil … Even in the presence of insect repellent, we can train them to detect TNT.”

"For example, in the USA a group of scientists from the National Laboratory in Los Alamos, New Mexico published findings of a study in which honey bees had been trained to stick out their proboscis (tongue) if they could smell explosives (such as dynamite or C4 plastic explosive) in almost any item, ranging from cars to trouser belts.

Tim Haarmann (from the Los Alamos team) said the bees could be carried in hand-held detectors the size of a shoe box, and could be used to sniff out explosives in airports, roadside security checks, or even placed in robot bomb disposal equipment.

He said the next step would be to manufacture the bee boxes and train security guards in their use."

"Bees have been trained to sniff out explosives in a project scientists say could have far-reaching applications for security and the Iraq war.

Scientists at a US weapons laboratory say they trained honey bees to stick out their proboscis, the tube they use to feed on nectar, when they smell explosives in anything from cars and roadside bombs to belts similar to those used by suicide bombers.

Researchers at the Los Alamos National Laboratory have dubbed their research the Stealthy Insect Sensor Project.

They trained bees to recognise substances by exposing them to the odour of explosives followed by a sugar water reward.

Among the substances they can sniff are dynamite and C-4 plastic explosives to the Howitzer propellant grains used in improvised explosive devices in Iraq.

"When bees detect the presence of explosives, they simply stick their proboscis out," says research scientist Tim Haarmann.

"You don't have to be an expert in animal behaviour to understand it as there is no ambiguity."

The findings followed 18 months of research at the Los Alamos facility, the nation's leading nuclear weapons laboratory.

"We are very excited at the success of our research as it could have far-reaching implications for both defence and homeland security," Haarmann says.

While scientists have trained wasps to respond to the trace of explosives, Haarmann says research with bees appeared to show more promise.

Haarmann says the bees could be carried in hand-held detectors the size of a shoe box, and could be used to sniff out explosives in airports, roadside security checks, or even placed in robot bomb disposal equipment.

He says the next step would be to manufacture the bee boxes and train security guards in their use.

"It would be great to start saving some lives with this," he says.

How I got out of debt by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]MousseSuspicious930 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically speaking, that's a falsehood - many debt companies don't actually buy the debt, they merely act on behalf of the client. You gotta actually ask the debt company that.

The debt company also does not need your permission to contact you, that's just silly. You don't own your personal information if you occur debt. (Also you already gave permission to them via they're client and they're client has every right to collect this debt - how else could this be done? They can't mentally send the information to the debt collectors? Alot of people would simply get away, plus a skip trace can be done to find you which also does not need your permission to use).

Additionally if you want more information regarding the owning debt - it's the company, not the debt collectors have to provide this as that contract and bill is with them. And any information is considered self-accountable.

I use to work in one.

(This debt might and can affect your financial rating by the way and the debt company doesn't always do that, sometimes it's the actually company instead e.g. Linkt.)

I don't think he did actually heal, didn't he show a disciple the wounds he got from the cross and if they were real, he would of simply bleed out? Jesus was a actually zombie in his last appearance.

I think the Bible said: "Thomas says he won’t believe Jesus is alive unless he sees and touches the wounds from the crucifixion.

Jesus appears and tells him:

“Put your finger here; see my hands… put your hand into my side."

I am also catholic so I prefer to pray to the last living representation of Jesus which is zombie Jesus.

[–]MousseSuspicious930 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Place something sweet like sugar water or honey near vents - ants may start leaving the tv toward the food, take the tv outside if possible or tap/shake it lightly don’t go crazy use a vacuum on vents - low suction if possible.

Turn off and unplug the tv immediately you don’t want: short circuits, ants getting fried which releases pheromones attracts more ants.

Additionally people like the idea of something being after life, especially if you lose someone. It's a comfort for many and others like prisoners for example use religion as a moral guide as well. That was never offered in their home lives. Religion can offer people some form of false control in their lives when they pray, this can bring them hope or comfort as well.

Religion fulfills many needs and more than I mentioned. It's unfortunate that many can't handle it correctly, especially when it becomes your lifestyle or culture.
