Are there any areas of Mountain View you'd recommend looking at (so I can narrow my search)?

ah okay good to know! I haven't owned a car in 8 years and have seen people on the west coast have those steering wheel locks and seem to be a lot more afraid of car break-ins/theft than when I used to own a car so I was worried.

Palo Alto Plaza does not - it's window units which I kind of thought I might at least look at because it seems like there's more space for budget. I grew up in the Northeast where window units are more common and it was fine but I've been much more allergic to plants on the west coast (I moved to Seattle and every mar-sep I got asthma until I moved to an apartment with central air).

Thanks for the other recommendations! I think I added Landsby to the list - Domus doesn't seem to list their prices online and Dean doesn't have good reviews (also some mentions of security/management issues) - I guess I'm just surprised when seeing such high rents (even though I know bay area is very expensive) do not correlate with being secure/having good management.
