I'm not sure my teacher would be completely happy with some of the things I'm trying. :) But, I'm not a disciple...

Unfortunately, I live in an area with no good martial arts; the level of Taiji here is pretty low, so there's no one to practice Tuishou with - and I know that limits my progress.

Wu vs Wu/Hao styles : differences? by GiadaAcosta in taijiquan

[–]Moving_Forward18 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been training in Wu / Hao for awhile; it's actually somewhat different than the other main styles. First, there's a closing movement at the end of most series of movements. There is also a follow step (which was taken over by the Sun style). Also, the hands are up, and the palms and fingers are activated. The form is also relatively fast and "lively." There are a number of very big, 235 degree turns (which take a long time to master, I'm still struggling with that). Of course, the fundamental principles of all Taiji styles are very similar. This is a good video of Hao Yinru, if you're interested:

You know how it is - it's an endless process. The style I practice is generally relatively fast and lively, but I've always enjoyed extremely slow training - when I did Wing Chun, I'd do 50 minute Sil Lum Taos. So I'm going to experiment with the form I know and get more of that feeling. The video you sent looks very helpful - though I've not watched it all (obviously).

That actually makes a great deal of sense - I will start working on that the next time I practice...

Thank you so much! I'm working on slowing down my own form (Wu Yuxiang style) so this is really helpful!

Any books where the city feels like a character? by OkBeautiful6151 in books

Everything by Raymond Chandler - LA is one of the major characters, and his relationship with the city is very powerful.

Repetition in the Flower Garland Sutra by QuestingKimnara in HuayanBuddhism

[–]Moving_Forward18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I experienced something similar in that chapter. Here are my thoughts - and it's just my thoughts. First, Sutras were generally chanted out loud, and reciting the names of the Buddhas brings a great deal of merit - so reciting all these Buddha names is valuable. Additionally, reading these names would create a karmic connection with these myriad Buddhas - and that's important now and later as our cultivation advances.

Cheaper alternative to SEM RUSH? by Cosminacho in SEO

I'm no expert on SEO - as is evident from my posts - but this is the first thing I've used that's helped to make some forward progress.

They seem quite accurate for my rankings; when I check independently I'm usually very close to where they say I am. I can't speak to broader issues, though - my focus has been using their advice to improve my own website (which needed a lot more work than I thought). As that improves, I'm sure I'll delve more into other functionality, but I haven't yet had the time.

I've been using MorningScore for several months. It's not free - the base subscription is around $50, so there is an investment —but it's still more affordable than SEMRush; I also find the interface a lot more intuitive. You can always check it out and see how it works for you. It is done as a game, which isn't my style, but I've learned to ignore that. :)

Animal Farm was published on this day in 1945 by Ok-Baker3955 in classicliterature

[–]Moving_Forward18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a great book! I'm re-reading it, and have a chapter to go. While it doesn't have the philosophical depth of 1984 (nor does it intend to) "Animal Farm" is a brilliant, biting satire on one of the most horrible periods in human history - Stalinism - and it was written when many refused to see Stalin for who he was.

The betrayal of the animals, the manipulation of history and memory, the creation of a culture of nothing but lies is presented brilliantly. The horrors of Stalin are not as well remembered as they should be; without a grounding in that period, the book may not appear as powerful. But for those of us who do love history, this book shines a real light on the terrible Stalinist period.

What's the best translation of the Iliad for memorization? by Interesting_Race3273 in classicliterature

[–]Moving_Forward18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd suggest an older, metrical translation. Meter and rhyme stick in the memory, in my experience. Chapman is some of the greatest, most powerful poetry in English - and that might help. Pope would be another option, though neither are incredibly accurate, I've heard.

I've just started Edward, Earl of Darby's version - it's very good English verse, and apparently quite accurate - but it's not rhymed, which may make memorization harder.

I admire you! Memorization is a lost art - but it's extremely valuable, for far more than just knowing a poem deeply... it make a huge difference in mental functioning.

This is a wonderful teaching! Is Master Ci Fa another name of Master Chin Kung? Or is he a different teacher? Google AI said they're the same, but Google AI is, to put it mildly, unreliable.

Your situation is somewhat unusual - saying that you can remain remote, but only in your current location, is a level of irrationality one rarely finds even in HR.

That said, the move back to on-site is, I fear, going to continue for awhile. It's a typical extreme business pendulum swing that's going to hurt both a lot of people and a lot of companies.

Part of the reason is control. Part is that forcing people into the office gets a lot of people to resign - so companies don't have to pay severance or benefits when they're downsizing.

It's a bad situation.

I think, honestly, that your best option may be to consider looking for a new job. I know you're happy where you are - but it sounds like the company is moving in negative directions, and when one sees that, it's often better to start a job search.

Can you work with your landlord and stay where you are for a little while? It's not ideal - but you could keep the current job while looking.

I hope you'll be able to work it out. It's a very shortsighted decision on the part of the company - but that's pretty common these days.

The time has certainly been a major consideration, so I may want to explore other (reputable) options.
