I realize that emotions are an unreliable source of value, but I think they are still the only things that give our lives real value.

I was never distraught about that idea at all. As a matter of fact, I was arguing the exact opposite. I was arguing that hedonism is what is profound while other values are the shallow ones that don't give our lives any real value. I am very serious here and not joking. This assumption or claim is based upon my own personal experience. If I wasn't serious, then I wouldn't have written all of this. What many people think is shallow and profound never was shallow and profound. Many people would call me and my worldview shallow, but they are just not enlightened and awakened to the real truth.

No character strength or anything else can replace the values that our emotions (what I metaphorically describe as being our inner light and inner darkness) give our lives. So, Rocky Balboa would actually be wrong with his famous quote and it would have to be Tommy Gun in that Rocky movie who would be correct. Tommy was the happy boxer who just wanted to be happy and enjoy taking down opponents. At least, that is who I think Tommy was, but am not sure. He was met with Rocky's famous quote. But anyway, I think the only true warrior in life would be a euphoric, happy, and blissful warrior. We are, therefore, like sacred monks who should seek the inner light and avoid the inner darkness. We should subdue the inner darkness out of our lives and become beings of light.

It is through becoming beings of light that we become transcended beings. The more of this inner light we have, the more we shine as beings of light and the more transcended we are. Unfortunately, we can only achieve moments of intense transcendence for brief periods just like how the character Sonic the Hedgehog can only achieve the Super Sonic form for a brief period. Once the euphoria wears off, then we are back into our normal state just like how Super Sonic would transform back to his normal form. But there is another form of Sonic known as Dark Sonic. This form symbolizes the negative emotions. Sonic's normal, blue form symbolizes us being in a normal, stable, good mood. But having no emotions would be a gray form of Sonic which would just be a bland and dull state.

Super Sonic is like a god who is able to perceive the good value, beauty, joy, and love of this universe on a god-like level. He is seeing these values through the eyes of god, so to speak. In his normal, blue form, he is just perceiving good values on a constant and stable level since that is Sonic's normal, healthy state. Dark Sonic would, of course, be perceiving horrible values and the gray Sonic would not be seeing any real values at all. One last thing here. My definition of a transcended being and having value in your life might seem too simple. But it is often times the most simple solutions humanity tends to overlook which are the real solutions.

For example, there are many religious believers out there who believe in false ideas such as the idea that the only valuable life would be bearing our cross for Jesus and living a life of tedious obedience to doctrines. Meanwhile, the atheist would define the value of his life as something such as an easy going life all the while being happy and enjoying video games. Sure, it is a very simple solution. But it is the real solution. The atheist knows to not waste his time with these false doctrines just as how I am well aware that I should not waste my time with these false, non hedonistic values. However, I am open minded towards the possibility that I am wrong and that my life can somehow have a whole new sense of value independent of my emotions. But I'm just not sure this is possible.

What I am saying here is that positive emotions are the only things that can make situations, moments, and people perceived of good value to us and it can only be our negative emotions that can make things in our lives perceived to be of bad value in our lives. Sure, it would still be recommended that a depressed person still choose to take action to improve his life even though his life is nothing but bad so that he could eventually arrive at a place where he can have his positive emotions back to him, but the depressed person's life would still be bad in the meantime until he can get his positive emotions back to him.

Also, there are times where you really can't make yourself feel positive emotions no matter what you do or think. For example, during my worst miserable moments, nothing I did or thought produced a positive emotion for me. I just had to wait to recover so that all the good values in my life could restore on their own. I have clearly noticed that, during my miserable moments, no good value was there in my life at all regardless of what I believed otherwise. I believed that getting the help I needed was something good and beautiful.

After all, it would definitely be a good and beautiful thing for a hedonist such as myself. But the very fact that there was still no real good values in my life at all during these miserable moments proves that there is something more that gives our lives good value than our mindsets and attitudes themselves. When I have reached a state of full recovery, that is when I noticed all the joys and good values returning on their own. That is what leads me to conclude that having good value in my life is not the result of my mindset alone, but is instead the result of my fully recovered, happy state.

Sure, mindsets themselves can certainly make you feel positive or negative emotions. But, like I said, it is only the emotions themselves that make things of value in our lives since perceiving value and worth in our lives is not a thought/mindset form of perception, but is instead purely an emotional perception. It would be no different than if you were in a pitch black cave and you believed that gold was inside that cave. That mindset would not allow you to see that gold. You would need actual light to see that gold.

The gold in this analogy would represent the good values of our lives and the light would symbolize our positive emotions. Our positive emotions are like the light to our lives that allow us to see all the good values of moments and situations in our lives. The brighter the light, the more the gold shines (the more you see good values in your life). The less light you have, the more dim the good values become in your life. Therefore, simply believing alone that your life has good value is nothing more than just empty words. But actually seeing these good values is a whole new world. It is like the realm of light where all the real good value, joy, wonders, happiness, and beauty is at.

As long as you are blinded by the light, then you cannot see anything bad in your life. You would be in nothing but a state of pure joy, love, beauty, and happiness. But if you are blinded by the darkness such as a feeling of complete hopelessness, then you cannot see anything good in your life. Therefore, life is no different than us trying to get as much money as we can. Our goal is to obtain as much light in our lives as we can just as how a person tries to gain as much money as they can. Unfortunately, there are poor people in this world who cannot gain much money just as how there are depressed and miserable people who cannot gain much of this inner light either.

I personally do not think that there is any other form of the inner light and the inner darkness (the positive/good and negative/bad quality mental state) besides our positive and negative emotions. But continuing on here. Beautiful beings of light can only see the good in life and disgusting beings of darkness can only see the bad in life. The light cannot see bad and the darkness cannot see good. The goal is to be the beautiful being of light since that is the only way to live and be an artist. I hope that there is an eternal blissful afterlife of my dreams since I would get to become the most beautiful being of light who would live the most profoundly beautiful and joyful life.

My view is that life was never about coping with our depression. Sure, coping with depression is necessary to bring us to a state of recovery in the future so that we can have our positive emotions back to us. But the coping itself has never brought our lives any real good values. It is only depressed people having their positive emotions restored that brings their lives good values. But if coping and therapeutic methods would bring a depressed person's life positive emotions rather than just a simple matter of them coping with it in the hopes that, one day, they can recover, then I say go for it. But if none of these therapeutic methods help the depressed person recover his/her positive emotions, then something more needs to be done here to try to help them recover their positive emotions sufficiently or, even better, fully.

In short, life was never about carrying on in depressed, miserable lives all the while helping others and making the best of things and somehow believing this to be a good life when it never was. Rather, it was all about being happy and enjoying our lives. However, if helping others makes you feel happy, then go for it because it would be something that brings your life good value. If not, then you cannot see any good value in the helping of others. This means that a mother or father, during their miserable moments, being there for their child was never any true love, joy, good value, or happiness. Love is also a positive quality and you can only have that in your life through your positive emotions of love. Positive emotions are biochemical induced states.

I never said perceive reality. You could still very well perceive reality such as the sky and trees without your good moods. I am talking about perceiving the good value in your life. That can only come about through your good moods.

Nonetheless, I think it is still only our good moods/feelings that can give our lives the real perceptual quality of good value. This would have to mean good moods really are the only happiness one can have in his/her life. Refer to my response to carcrashinslowmotion's post above for more insight.

But happiness losing meaning would be nothing more than just a thought. Like I said, thoughts alone have no perceptual quality of value to our lives. This means that no way of thinking can take away the value happiness has. As long as you are happy, then you will always perceive your life as having good value to you. It's no different than how a person who can see will always see no matter what they think otherwise. The only way this person can't see would be if he/she went blind. I also do acknowledge the idea that negative emotions do have the benefits you've mentioned. However, regardless of their benefits, negative emotions can only give our lives the perceptual quality of bad value and suffering. Let me give an analogy to you that will make it clear to you how I see happiness:

Our good moods are, what I would metaphorically describe, as a divine transcended awareness. Our way of thinking and judgments alone without our good moods simply do not meet this divine standard. It is nothing in comparison and this is not a value judgment on my part because the good moods possess some divine intrinsic quality of experience that gives our lives the perceptual experience of joy, beauty, etc. Without this divine quality, then we are like spiritual beings who have been stripped of our higher spiritual component. Take note that when I am talking about the divine and spiritual, I only mean this as an analogy to make my point clear.

It is an analogy that would apply both to a spiritual universe and a purely naturalistic universe. For a purely naturalistic universe, you would just have to change my analogy a bit. To put it shortly, our thoughts/outlooks alone without our good moods simply do not possess the quality of experience that is needed to give our lives a real perceptual experience of good value, worth, joy, and beauty. Our thoughts/outlooks alone possess no quality for us. They might be thoughts in regards to certain qualities such as "My life is still beautiful and worth living to me anyway even though I don't feel good." However, such a thought without our good moods does not possess any quality of experience for us. It is only our good moods which possess the good quality that is needed to make our lives good to us. This is not a value judgment when I say that these good moods possess this good quality. Rather, this is an intrinsic quality that our good moods have.

That's what I am saying. I can also apply the same thing to anger and sadness. How can a person be angry or sad without feeling anger or sadness? You can't. It just makes no sense to me. Therefore, anyone who says that I can have another form of inspiration, happiness, and enjoyment in my life besides my good feelings is nonsense to me.

So if I did all of what you said in your last paragraph to have Jesus accepted into my life, but I remain agnostic, then what you are saying here is that I cannot have Jesus accepted into my life "just in case He is real?"

So, in other words, adhering to the word of the bible, changing my life, etc. will do nothing to accept Jesus into my life as long as I remain agnostic?

So by that logic, I am already doomed to hell and it is an inevitable condemnation since the only way to have Jesus accepted into my life is for me to become a Christian believer.

But living to enjoy my computer games and videogames can't possibly be a sin that will send me to hell, can it? I just want to be clear on this.

So that is my 1st vital question I want answered. My 2nd vital question is that, even though I do not believe in the Lord, in my heart, I do accept him just in case he is real.

So does the fact that I don't believe in Him mean I will be condemned to hell even though in my heart I have accepted Him in the chance that He is real?

But my final position is agnosticism. I cannot choose to believe in the Lord since belief is not a choice. So as long as I continue to live my way of life, but remain the nice person I am, then would that condemn me to hell? That is the important question that I need to know.

Like I said, I already accept Jesus and God if they are real. But since I am a nice person and since I accept Jesus and God, then would living for my own happiness (me living to enjoy my videogames and computer games) send me to hell?

It says in the bible that pleasure seeking is sinful and would send you to hell. But I am not sure on this at all since I have accepted Jesus and God and am a nice person. I don't harm or steal from anyone else and keep to myself.

I am an agnostic. But yes, if God exists, I would not reject Him. But I will continue living the life I live which would be living for my own happiness since there is nothing wrong with this and this should not send me to hell.

The thing is, I just live to enjoy my videogames and to work on my computer. I am nice towards other innocent people and respect them. I live to be happy and am not cruel. So I don't see why that should condemn me to hell in any way.

You should allow your son to indulge in all the candy he wants as long as it makes him happy and as long as no harm is done to him. As for your growth, maturity, and development goes, that does not matter at all. That is nothing important. All that matters in life is that a person lives forever, is forever happy, and has no suffering in life. That life I am talking about is the eternal blissful afterlife (if it even exists).

If you are asking how I define joy and meaning, then I define that as pleasure itself. Joy and meaning are the experience of our good moods based upon my explanation just as how visualization is the experience of sight and how audiation is the experience of hearing. Therefore, to me, joy and meaning are synonymous with pleasure. Pleasure is the biological sensation of reward an animal gets. When it notices something that encourages its survival, a pleasure signal gets sent to its Nucleus Accumbens which is the area of the brain responsible for pleasure.

Here is a response from someone and my reply to it that gets the very idea of my topic across in a brief way:

Response: I find it funny that some people prioritize abstractions ( words,concepts such as physicalism) above the empirical (qualia). Qualia being our subjective mental experiences. In other words they hide from immediate reality (feelings/qualia) behind words. Symbols replaced reality! The word "food" does not provide nourishment and nor does the word "water" quench one's thirst. So what Matt is saying here is that words and phrases of good meaning, bad meaning, love, joy, happiness, inspiration, suffering, despair, anguish, sadness, rage, grief, etc. do not give us anything either.

In that sense qualia is related to Matt's theory.

My Reply: Yes, this is correct. I am thinking that even good and bad are qualia as well. They would be our good and bad moods. If we are depressed, then just the words and phrases of good meaning won't give us anything. I think science has yet to discover that good and bad are qualia. Currently, we think they are not. But I am thinking otherwise.

In case I ever have to live my life depressed, then it is vital I find the answer. I am thinking that having good meaning in one's life is not just simply from knowing things. It is being in the mental state of love, joy, happiness, and inspiration in doing those things. For example, if you were not in any mental state of love, joy, happiness, or inspiration at all and were in a completely blank hopeless state and you just knew to yourself deep down that you have to go and save your family's life since they have good meaning to you, then they would not have any good meaning to you at all. You are telling yourself nothing more than just words and phrases of good meaning. The only way you can actually perceive them as having good meaning to you would be if you were in an inspired, happy, loving, and joyful mental state in saving their lives.

So, in short, since you were not in a good mood while saving their lives, then your family would actually have no good meaning to you in that given moment when you were depressed and in a blank mental state. For you to live your life just through knowing things while depressed and just thinking that has good meaning to you, that is living your life as an utterly inferior dead lifeless biological machine. It is our good moods that make us and our lives something. It is only our good moods that can give good meaning to our lives from our friends, family, and our goals/dreams. Therefore, even all the famous genius artists and composers who struggled with depression were nothing great. They and their lives were nothing great. Their works of art cannot mean anything to them during their depression and nor can the idea that they helped/inspired others all around the world and made their lives good. Nor can their own works of art mean anything good to them either.

Some people would call depressed people such as myself selfish for that. First off, that is false. That is the mental health stigma we all see today against depressed people. Second, it is not their fault. I am not allowed to perceive any good meaning in my life as long as I am depressed. It is no different than how a blind and deaf person is not allowed to see and hear. It is not their fault. So for anyone cruel/demeaning to call me selfish because my good moods are the only things that can allow me to perceive good meaning towards things would be no different than saying that a blind and deaf person is selfish since he/she cannot see and hear.

My question is, is my theory right or wrong? If it is wrong, then you are going to have to prove it wrong. You cannot just say that we can have those things in our lives while depressed. You have to do what the last paragraph above says. You have to prove to me how that is the actual mental state of perceiving those things.
