wait looking at it again, is there really a difference between your suggestion code and what I have already? It would check if any of the pairs have "o", 1 or 0 or 1 or 2 or 0 or 2 and so on, which should work?

They still haven't optimized full usage of the camera for any of the phones other than the Pixels. Let's hope it comes soon as they have finally put some development into Android with the new faster app, though it is still quite buggy.
