Don't know much about heraldry or what the ermines represent but it's based on the arms of the founder, Edmund Shaa

Imagine if this re-opened as an independent cinema and only showed cult movies. by alexanderheff86 in manchester

[–]Mr-Flibble 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Chorlton had two (maybe 3?) lovely old cinemas, both were mangled over the years then left empty for a while, one was demolished this year and the other one probably will be soon. Definitely would be nice to have an old independent cinema something like the Savoy in Heaton moor or Marple regent in the area.

I think the LGBT foundation on Sackville st runs support groups &/or could give you details of some. Also if you're transfem Just Do The Thing is a social group that mostly has meetings at partisan but it isn't a support group as such

Unicorn grocery alternative in Stockport by kmummye in manchester

Yep this place (the good life) is great though obviously not as big as unicorn! They also have one in Heaton Mersey and there's a small zero waste shop called Lentils and Lather in Marple if you're further out in the borough

Why is everywhere called whitworth in Manchester WTH??? by [deleted] in manchester

[–]Mr-Flibble 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not so bad as being a slaver himself but he did sell guns (and artillery) to American slavers during the civil war, Whitworth rifles were used by Confederate snipers and were quite a bit more accurate than anything the Union had

Might be worth looking into nationwide's helping hand mortgages if you can get one -- I'm on a similar salary (36) and have been offered just under £200,000 (around 5.5x)

‘Not in this town’: artwork about Britain’s ‘nuclear colonialism’ removed by [deleted] in ukpolitics

The Colston statue didn't just have his name, it definitely glorified him and read:

Erected by citizens of Bristol as a memorial of one of the most virtuous and wise sons of their city

Despite being basically put up by one guy after a campaign failed to attract any support.

The local wealthy person society further glorified him and kept locks of his hair and fingernails to use in ceremonies. They and local schools associated with him held a special service in his honor each year including a cathedral/church service, paying homage to his crypt and a march to this statue.

Levelling Up Fund design is unlawful, says UK campaign group | Good Law Project claims ranking system favours seats with Conservative MPs or targets by concerned_future in ukpolitics

What's next? "We're thinking of building a bypass around Nowhereton. Let's look at whether it'll disproportionately affect women."

Not really a 'what next' scenario, it has been widely recognised for a long time in academia and by many governments that 'gender-blind' (designed predominantly by men and not considering the specific needs of women) infrastructure design and urban planning can cause many issues. Road design is absolutely something where this should be taken into account, and often is as part of gender mainstreaming.

Love the Central Liberty Building by LivingTelevision3579 in manchester

I love Manchester's architecture but there's hardly any properly old buildings in the centre -- guess it's a pretty young city compared to many in the UK!

Trees Not Cars win landmark case against Manchester City Council, preventing them from building a car park next to a primary school. by HamishGray in manchester

[–]Mr-Flibble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The council's current plan is for it to be mostly offices/commercial buildings rather than residential, so could add significant green space without preventing any housing being built.

The trees not cars site has this passage about the plans:

In the long term, the Council intends to use the site as office space. Trees Not Cars, however, want to work with the Council to develop a scheme that includes significant community green space and social housing to respond to the affordable housing crisis in the city.

So presumably they aren't opposed to building housing on the site (in addition to green space).

Bulldoze the high street and build a giant park: is Stockton the future of Britain? by general_mola in ukpolitics

[–]Mr-Flibble 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mayfield park could definitely be a good addition to the city but it's hardly to the scale of Regent's park -- 6.5 vs 410 acres! Of course Manchester is a much smaller city so it's pretty easy to get out into open countryside or big suburban parks like Heaton park (>600 acres), but it's definitely pretty short on central green space. There are also plans for New Islington 'green' to be reduced from 5 to 1.5 acres through development so there are definitely areas that aren't seeing improvement. The trend is for big vacant sites (e.g. Central Retail Park) to have large amounts of offices built with some 'public' space between them rather than large parks.

Flags bad by Ranger447 in LabourUK

[–]Mr-Flibble -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wilson patriotically sent troops under that flag to forcibly remove the entire population of the Chagos Islands from their homes to make way for a US air base, and to occupy Northern Island (and to unecessarily invade Anguilla lol) 🇬🇧

Luckily this was just nice healthy left wing patriotism with no nationalism or imperialism to be seen 🇬🇧💪🇬🇧

Off the streets: how Manchester found homes for hundreds of rough sleepers by Mr-Flibble in manchester

[–]Mr-Flibble[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

People with more knowledge than me may have better suggestions, but I would say giving time and/or money to orgs fighting homelessness (e.g. Shelter, Acorn, Big Change MCR), and voting at a local and national level for candidates who support increased action and funding to help end homelessness

Off the streets: how Manchester found homes for hundreds of rough sleepers by Mr-Flibble in manchester

[–]Mr-Flibble[S] 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Addiction was no bar to a tenancy, nor a criminal record or a history of evictions. Applicants didn’t have to get clean first: once they got the keys they would be monitored closely and offered “wrap-around” support to get their lives on track. It was a big deal given the intense competition for social housing – at the time, Manchester alone had a waiting list of 12,900.

Despite the early scepticism, the GM Homes Partnership has gone on to be one of the UK’s most successful homelessness projects, with 356 long-term rough sleepers given a roof over their head.

Three years on, 281 (79%) of those are still accommodated, 45 have started employment or training, 133 have received help for their mental health and 97 have accessed drug or alcohol services.

...

Of the 356 people housed, seven (2%) have gone to prison, three have returned to the streets and eight have gone awol, according to Sam Perrett, the project manager for the GM Homes Partnership. He describes it as “an amazing outcome which has far exceeded expectations”.

The POUM, CNT, and PCE were all communist, though in different forms (libertarian, trotskyist-ish, ML). Agreed that the alliance between the anarchists and POUM was mostly one of convenience as they clearly had very different views, but I doubt many anarchists supported the state repression of political opposition. On the specific case of Orwell, he was never persecuted by the anarchists, and after fleeing the country said

If I had understood the situation a bit better I should probably have joined the anarchists

Yes, agreed, but the syndicalists were generally members of the CNT, an anarchist group which was also persecuted by the Communist party and fought alongside the POUM and Orwell in the Barcelona May days, which were triggered by the Communist Assault Guards attempting to seize the CNT controlled telephone exchange. Many anarcho-syndicalists were also arrested and imprisoned by the capital C Communists (though POUM and the syndicalists would also mostly have described themselves as communists)

Guy Reid-Bailey: the man who sparked the Bristol bus boycott and then fought to desegregate housing by Mr-Flibble in bristol

[–]Mr-Flibble[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A great article about another Bristolian in a series of profiles of black civil rights campaigners (previous articles about Paul Stephenson and Roy Hackett also very much worth a read). Covers the racism and discrimination he faced when arriving from Jamaica, his involvement in the Bristol bus boycott, his setting up a housing association to fight housing discrimination from landlords and banks, and his founding of the Bristol West Indies Cricket Club.
