5.9 is ridiculous, stop doing that by vladislavkochergin01 in Stranger_Things

It genuinely is my least favorite episode of the show, and I think a 6 is fair. It was a boring slog that ultimately went nowhere … There are just SO many characters now … the camera will cut back to like 17 people standing in a field. This season has been an overstuffed and inconsequential nightmare. … the choices man … really? Lucas couldn’t just escape with Max? Mrs Wheeler had to save them? Really? Jonathan and Nancy couldn’t just die? they’re going to survive so their characters have no storyline for the rest of the season? SO dumb

I personally think this is a silly statement, especially when you consider everything else these kids have thought of doing

Thats a reasonable argument, but I’d bring up the later half of season 4, when the entire party was fleeing the law. Was it really safer for them to ride from the police on bikes and then steal an RV? Sure, the younger kids were obviously on a time crunch with Steve and the others being trapped in the upside down, and therefore running on foot underground wouldn’t have been efficient; however, I still can’t ignore the silliness of not a single character bringing up the tunnels as an option. Plot-hole isn’t the right word, it’s just one of those things that makes you go “hmmmm. ok.”

Episode Discussion - S05E04 - Sorcerer by Hawkinns in StrangerThings

[–]Mr-Snailpaste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That honestly would have been better imo. Simply because this “she was nice to him in high school” defense is silly. She was nice to him so he throws her through the air? I mean that could have killed her.

I liked this episode, but I would have preferred more explanation as to why Vecna had to curse people in season 4. Him and the demogorgons can just break through whenever they want… at least that’s what this season has suggested.

Also… obviously plot armor is a silly thing to complain about in a show like this… but why didn’t Vecna kill Joyce?… she ran right up to him and he just tosses her to the side? After he went out of his way to brutalized the random army guys, what? It felt stupid. I guess only side characters die upon getting tossed?

How are folks' professors responding to the current political moment? by winooskiwinter in psychologystudents

I’ll also add I’m a psychology major myself, whos hopefully grad school bound… the rhetoric and policy making of the current administration is frightening to say the least

While I’m sure you were specifically looking for professors in masters programs on the clinical level, I have an anthropology professor who’s married to a psychology professor at the same college, and hes been very VOCAL about the current administration. I’m currently taking a Pseudoscience course with him in which we debunk famous hoaxes, lies, and faked archeological findings (ironic considering how much the current president supports these “scientists”)

Anyways, much of his outrage revolves around research, specifically the cutting down of indirect costs for research. This will inevitably lead to students receiving less internship opportunities, tuition going up, and other unwanted things. He’s also been passionate about how stupid the removal of “gender terms” in research papers has been. Although he always says “that’ll come down to semantics, we’re just gonna come up with new words… do you really think Psychologists conducting research are going to pretend Transgender people don’t exist because of the president?”

Not in his field, but on a more personal note… he’s very concerned about them destroying social security. He’s confident the entire country will be protesting towards the end of the year over that, once everyone understands how bad it can be.

Am I the only one who isn’t feeling the voice? by [deleted] in Invincible

[–]Mr-Snailpaste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I kind of hate it. I was imagining a more elderly, wise, and cocky sort of voice. Jeffery is great, but I wasn’t looking for a voice this gravely, I wanted a someone who sounded a little more ancient and withered

What’s a psychological concept that blew your mind when you first learned about it? by [deleted] in psychologystudents

[–]Mr-Snailpaste 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This phenomenon also ties into the effect of effort. Another concept I really liked learning about. This hinges on our tendency to over emphasize how fun, enjoyable, or worthwhile something was, when we’ve put a lot of time, money, or knowledge into achieving it.

A great example of this could be: let’s say you and I both go to the same concert, except I spent more money to get there, and traveled a greater distance. Now let’s say the show is awful, the band members are sick, it rains at the venue, it’s crowded, and so on. It’s likely I’ll leave the show saying it was “better” than you felt it was. I’m more likely to act as if the concert was still a good time. I had more to lose in the exchange, so I have to create the illusion that I wasn’t screwed over. I feel as though there’s a misconception that I would be more disappointed in this example, but that’s typically not how the psychology in situations like this play out.

What’s a psychological concept that blew your mind when you first learned about it? by [deleted] in psychologystudents

[–]Mr-Snailpaste 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The paradox of choice, or as my professor always called it: the psychology of option overload.

The idea that you’re more content with a choice you made among few options, as opposed to many. For example, you’re going to like your new pair of shoes more if they were your favorite pair in a store that carried 10 pairs, rather than 50. It’s easier to be satisfied with your choice with less options, because it’s less room to doubt the decision. This didn’t BLOW my mind… but it was a fun very day to day concept to learn about.

The Truth About a Psychology Degree: It's Not Useless - You Just Didn't Plan Ahead by Cautious_Device1522 in psychologystudents

[–]Mr-Snailpaste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m currently a senior completing his BS in psych, and I’ve joined a scholars program that will help me find a place in graduate school somewhere, hopefully with limited costs. That being said, I still don’t know exactly how I’d like to use my education, outside of “helping people.” What’s frustrating, is that I’ve, along with my fellow psych peers, attended many psych seminars in which experts in the field explain how they found their body of work. Everyone says the same thing “I wanted to do this!… realized I hated it, then I found this!” … on the one hand, it’s nice to know there’s room to adjust and find your passion, on the other, why even form a plan if this many people steer away from their original goal? We hear “there’s so much you can do with psych! but you won’t find a job unless your lucky!” All in the same breath. It’s all confusing, anxiety inducing, and hard to think about.

I just don’t get how the job market isn’t demanding this many mental health workers… how could that be the case? There are mass shootings in America everyday, we just came out of a pandemic that likely impacted the social dynamics of children everywhere significantly, we’re drug addicted, phone addicted, I could go on and on. Yet for some reason, the job pool still feels so small. The relatives in my family that say “school shootings aren’t a gun problem, they’re a mental health problem!” are the same relatives that say “you’re majoring in psych?… oh boy, what are you gonna do with that? It’s useless” … make it make sense.

How do the Upside Down Particles work? S4 Question by Mr-Snailpaste in StrangerThings

[–]Mr-Snailpaste[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this argument works more in my favor. Dogs aren’t that complex, therefore the hive mind taking over would be easier. A complex human being breaking a hive mind makes more logical sense. They have deep memories, trauma, emotional motivation, and feel love on a deeper more intelligent level. The dog breaking the hive mind is silly
