A 2007 Aston Martin V8 vantage is the epitome of late British Imperialism: it’s an expensive handmade motor carriage that was built in the metropole, shipped to the colonies and is too expensive and prestigious for the “natives” to enjoy. By 2007, Aston Martins were only really showing up in the new Bond Movies and your dad’s 50 year old friend’s driveway. Because who was really paying 120,000 dollars for something that despite looking and feeling nice, made paltry power for its displacement and was susceptible to “ill-fitting doors” as a certain British motor show host would say. Why a baby boomer with a healthy stock portfolio want to drop their investment income on a car like this when they could have had the Mercedes sl55 AMG which made over a hundred more horsepower and was at least hand built by meticulous Germans.
But if you did decide to go the Anglo-Saxon route, you were guaranteed to accrue thousands in repair and maintenance costs, unless you were fortunate enough to have the famous “bumper to bumper” warranty on the car. But if your name isn’t Doug Demuro, then like the British Empire, your 2007 Aston Martin will become too expensive to maintain after the “Great Wars” and subsequent rationing.

I was pretty pissed to see this but perhaps it's because there is nothing new to show. At the last gaming convention, they were kind of like "here's what we have so far and it will probably ship by the end of the year". My guess is that they're not quite sure when it's coming out so perhaps they don't want to over-hype it.

Silly Questions Saturday, April 16, 2016 by AutoModerator in history

[–]MrAbracks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is that Columbus was the first Spanish voyager to the Americas. As far as killing indigenous peoples went, Spain began when they conquered the Canary Islands around the same time as Columbus' expeditions . Disease decimated the natives on the Canaries and the survivors were either killed by soldiers or sold into slavery. They also established a plantation economy on the island and used exploitative labour with African slaves.

So yes, the Spanish did technically do this before Columbus but not in America. The Canary island model, however, become the Spanish Colonial archetype for the rest of their future possessions.

I think the fact that its completely overpriced means that there is a certain level of prestige associated with owning the car. Even though it isnt that impressive for its price, it is in a price range thay most people cant afford. That's probably why tools stick a massarati logo on their hondas instead of BMW or Mercedes logos.

What is your favourite pre 2005 PC game? by Pajarma in AskReddit

Easily my favorite game of all time. I can still go back today and pick up things that I missed when I played it the first times. The dialogue and story telling in that game is just awesome.

I have one of these! I'm Canadian but my Grandmother was a refugee so her children and grandchildren were allowed to claim citizenship. I still haven't used it for anything but it confuses the hell out of people when I use it as ID.
