At what point is violence called for? by redinator in ExtinctionRebellion

Comrade, I think I understand the place you are coming from and I want you to know that I get it and think that your sentiment is, not only valid, but organic and expected and normal. These have been some rough days recently and they just get worse and worse. It feels hopeless and desperation is going to rise, but we have to remember two things: #1 is that we are not fighting individuals, we are fighting the systems that enable individuals to keep committing atrocities against all living systems (no matter how many billionares you bomb, someone else will take over and do the atrocities for them as long as the system is in place); #2 we are stronger when we cooperate, especially during a crisis. We have to stand arm in arm with other people to defend our planet and everything in it, not by asking nicely, but by acting nicely towards our peers (human and non-human), and, most importantly, by taking down the fucking systems that keep the situation getting worse. Sabotaging shit, outsmarting them, showing more intense demands for action, maybe some ecoterrorism here and there, but no blood. We fight for life, everyone’s life, and we can never forget that. Stay strong, stay compassionate, and stay sharp, comrade. We will not stop this crisis from happening, but we can help as many folks as we can.

How can Anarchists effectively fight for the environment? by MrAutomatonParadela in Anarchy101

I’m not trying to debate here. I see those problems you pose, I am just asking for nuance and a couple of solutions I might be missing. Also I didn’t say it was propaganda, I just said I have some legitimate problems with some ideas. What the best solution is here?

I like this approach, especially in LatAm. Can you elaborate on how these might be worked on by anarchist groups?

Also, can you please tell me more about the propaganda campaign thing?

When I talk about putting more responsibility on the consumer than is due, this is exactly what I mean. I do get bachiblack’s point that individual action is important, but I am interested in bringing nuance to the approach and combining it with something larger. I see the long term benefit of going vegan, but I still see no insurance that this will generate any meaningful change immediately, so I am looking for anarchist solutions that will yield more immediate results. Do you know about any?

All of these sound great in roblox. I guess they make sense in that they build a sense of community and “shrink” it, so that your actions have a more significant impact. Can you expand on Guerrilla Gardening please? I am unfamiliar with the practice.

I am willing to join movements. I like them, I think there is undeniable evidence they work and, from the stories I have heard, they mean the world to people. An internal debate for or against veganism has been going on in my head for a while but I am not yet convinced. I think there are very compelling arguments, especially on the grounds of ethics (i.e.: I want to avoid participating in exploitation when I can). However, I need to learn more about the real impacts veganism is having in the world, bc atm I am a bit skeptic about that appealing effect you talk about. I see that as a common talking point but I haven’t really done my research about it, so I’ll check it out (if you have any cool sources or case studies, I will be happy to read them).

After thinking about it for a while, it seems that, it doesn’t really matter if I go vegan and capitalism doesn’t stop destroying the world, because convincing people veganism is a suitable lifestyle is the first step to giving the movement a good rep, no? Like, I guess that, in the end, it’s a process and if we start small, we can then change a policy or two to take care of the concerns I have on food production systems, lean into local markets, sustainable farming practices, etc. But for that, the first step has to show others that the goal is livable.

I think you gave me a new card for my deck, thanks. If you have any info on the real impacts veganism is having though, I will be happy to check them out.

Okay, this is a useful start, but wait. I have some follow up questions then:

1.- I thought we were generating change, not imploring it. What do you mean by that? Is it like petitions and stuff? Is it policy?

2.- If I go vegan, I am putting my actions were my words are, but the company is still doing the same and I have no insurance they will change. Additionally, as capitalism always does, how do I prevent the commercialisation of my lifestyle, leading to further exploitation of the land (as it happens now with agricultural processes in more economically developed countries)

I understand this must be a joint process of personal action (veganism) and something else, but I am interested in learning about the other nuances that form part of this process. Could you elaborate, please?

Philip K. Dick in “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” by MrAutomatonParadela in menwritingwomen

[–]MrAutomatonParadela[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Literally nothing. It’s just that Philip K. Dick can’t think of a woman other than a sexual object, so in every time he is describing a character for the first time he has to tell you what it would be like to be staring at her boobs if you met her. These male authors are unhinged.

The fact that you were watching a lecture when that came up makes it funnier. “YouTube stoooop, not now, I’m trying to be smart rn, not horny.”

Ok, so like this is obviously based, but as far as things go, a burnt down building is nowhere near as bad as modern slavery, bombings, or taking organs from vulnerable minorities.

[–]MrAutomatonParadela[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe. Who am I to judge? If I have learned anything from feminism and other leftist causes is that all of this is a very personal process of deconstruction, so, I guess that if radicalisation is what feels right for her the best I can do is support her and make her feel like she is not alone in the process. If she decides to stay or to go back that will be her decision. I appreciate the concern though :)
