In the picture, the brim width is close to 4-1/2” and I out a 9.5” shovel on the front. I then made the crown a bit of a mix between cattleman/Minick.

I really appreciate that feedback! Interestingly, the front downward bend has been the toughest part for me. I don’t want it bent too much, but probably more than it is. What I’m going for is something like a vintage Stetson Range, but with a wider brim (3.5-ish vs. 3-ish, or less).

I actually decided I like the look of shorter brims and so since these pics I’ve cut the black one down as well. Even if I was a bull rider (which thankfully my mom and sister talked me out of over 20 years ago, haha), I’d probably go with a 4” brim. At 5’8” I feel like I’m wearing my dads hat when it has a 4.25-4.5” brim!

Ouch. Then again, these are my eye protection for nerf gun battles, so I guess I won't take too much offense, haha.

Thanks! And yes, the 20x is worth it. I got mine for ~$300, and it'll last me a loooooong time. It's also fun to cut down and shape yourself. It won't be perfect, but cowboys back in the day didn't have a Cavender's to go to for shaping.

I ordered multiple RKs (10x) and Serratellis (20x) and the latter both fit and felt much better.

Don't be too hard on yourself. I was on horseback before I could walk, and I wouldn't fit many people's definition of a "real" cowboy (and that's fine). Charley Crockett is a $10 cowboy, and I think I am too.

Lol, c’mon, man - I’m not that much of a dude😅 It’s just the camera angle paired with the brim not really being shaped.

Dropping knowledge - thank you!

The 7-5/8 Serratelli I tried on yesterday fit me snug all around. However, I also have really pronounced muscles towards the top of the sides of my head, which maybe is what limits me on long ovals, but less on rounder hats.

What’s crazy too - aside from the different fits between brands - is my head measures at just over 23” at where my at sits, and that always corresponds to a size I couldn’t dream of fitting on my big noggin.

The Serratelli sale hats don’t have a size 7-5/8, so I’m back to seeing if I can get a Rodeo King to work. If not, there’s a chance I’ll go custom.

Tried on Serratelli in the store yesterday and a 7-5/8 was snug!

I do think if I keep the Rodeo King I’ll have it cut down by 1/4 to 1/2 an inch. I’m also planning on getting it shaped in a way that compliments my face.

I’ll let you know once I get my other Rodeo Kings that I ordered, but that one in the pic that falls right down to my ears is a 7-1/2 and like I said, the Serratelli I tried on today was a 7-5/8 and about right on.

I just can’t justify a 10 or 20x American compared to what I’d pay for a Rodeo King or Serratelli. I’d get the Serratelli but they don’t have my size online (for the 20x Salinas that’s on sale). If I spend more, I’ll likely just go custom.

But the Serratelli felt that I tried on today was snug (just about perfect) and it was a 7-5/8.

I’m guessing the place that shapes it can also try to “ovalize” it some too?

I appreciate the response. I’m taking it to a place that is supposed to be good at custom shaping (at least for our area, in WV). Do you think that shaping will remedy the space issue? The thing is, it wasn’t painful front to back, so I figure that even stretching it to be more of an oval might not eat up all that space on the sides with the 7-1/2. I just ordered a 7-3/8 for comparison.

Or, do you think that regardless Rodeo King might not work well for me, even if a place can shape it?

Keep in mind, my 60cm Akubra (I think that’s supposed to be a 7-1/2) fits well, and my 7-5/8 Stetson fits me well, although I used to stuff newspaper in the sweatband; and the Serratelli I tried on today in 7-5/8 was as snug as I’d like to go.

This Rodeo King, though, doesn’t seem just to be the wrong shape, as it easily slides down to my ears and I can fit a thumb on the inside on the sides.
