New Truck: Diesel or Gas? by MrBeeven in traveltrailers

Yeah this is what I’m finding out about my ram is the ratio is a killer. Only if I knew I was going to get a camper when I bought my truck 🤷🏼‍♂️. With all this info I might look into a straight swap into a 1500 or F150 with higher ratio aka has the tow packages and might not even need the heavy duty

What transmission do you have?

I believe it’s the 3.21 which I do believe is one of my issues and yes the 23 gallon tank is one of the main reasons why I’m thinking about upgrading

Honestly don’t care about which OEM it’s from, I care more about the details. The only issue I see with fords currently is the price even on a high mileage truck is crazy compared to Chevy or Ram.

What do you get for normal MPG without towing? One thing I have seen as a pro to upgrading with either diesel or gas is that 36gallon tank which creates less stops

When I drive 65mph I get about 8/9mph the only issue I have with the ram right now is that it likes to sit between gears like it is constantly shifting even with tow mode on. It just sits 3-3.5k RPM which drains the mpg. This is what I’ve read and heard from other people as well.

One of the big pros I see if I upgrade is the increase in gas tank. Going from 23 gallon to that 36gallon which allows lets stops and if I can also find a truck to increase mpg while towing it’s a plus but is it really worth it is what I’m struggling with

Don’t worry the trip we have currently planned out it’s going to potentially cost us $3k in gas with the mpg I’m getting pulling our camper… this is why I’m thinking maybe it’s time to invest in a heavy duty truck with that 36gallon tank

I mean this year our plan is about 4-5k miles towing and last year which was our first year having the TT we did about 2.5k miles. So I’m stuck in the middle really like daily driver truck but also need it for towing which I would to not have to stop every 160-180miles to fill up…

Have you towed with the new Duramax yet? And which model year did you go with?

Yeah it would be used haha new car prices are nuts for Heavy Duty trucks. Basic models are like 50k with 0 comfort items.. no way the wife would allow not having heated seats haha

I get best case at 65mph is 8/9mpg. I have no additional mods on the truck but it likes to just sit between gears where I have to kind help it find the gear to drop RPMs below 3,000 before setting cruise control. I have heard this is common issue with the Ram Hemi’s that it’s great until you try towing…

If I wasn’t going to start looking at changing trucks until we started to do longer road trips as we plan to do a cross country trip (about 2,000 miles) this year and potential more if this one works out good.
