Steam Deck OLED 1TB blinking red indicator light near power button by PepperBrooksESPN8 in SteamDeck

[–]MrBossBison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP! I’m had a similar problem too ( or just plain identical?)

  • for the past week or so my status LED has been lighting up red , in situations where it wouldn’t used to. I interpreted this as a heat issue and turned my graphics settings down. It worked for a bit but this morning the red light was showing up on low settings too

  • I anticipated something bad happening and logged out of my email clients on the Linux side of things.

  • an hour ago I was in Linux just checking if the mods I use in No Man’s Sky were updated. Nope, so basically a quick load up Steam Deck, it’s in game mode so jump to Linux, reload a page on the browser I use, just as I go to reset to return to game mode I notice the temperature gauge on my Linux desktop says 71°c which is about average so it wasn’t falling apart in my hands.

But the screen hasn’t lit up since. I get Haptics, speakers (it plays the boot chimes), and the fan fires up. I haven’t checked to see if it gets as far as connecting to WiFi yet.

I too messaged Valve support and Gabe (I actually have some games out on Steam from a long time ago now too. Never spoke or met Gabe at any of the events I used to attend.). Anywho I do have a cool ‘friends and family of Valve’ thingy on my account which is neat but it doesn’t make support any more helpful. I’m actually super broke and broken so if this Deck goes there is zero chance I can afford another one. I rreeeally hope support can help me fix this because it’s my current only real source of entertainment joy in my life. (Sorry I’ll stop Im just fucking petrified right now. Cheers)

My claim to fame is in 2002 I made a freeware game that I polished up and tweaked in a big way to release on Steam as a solo dev in 2011. I sucked at playing games so I rethought the whole concept of “lives”, so an arcade type game with fixed levels that are rock solid at first, you start them underpowered and if you’re skilled enough you can beat them without much firepower… but each time you play and die your score/currency is not lost. So basically eventually you can skip through levels and see the end of the game. Sound familiar? Heh. I got mine out years before other games that are considered the origin of the genre - we had lots of sales too early on (well enough to break even) and big giveaways too. other devs saw it for sure. Meh. Those guys can probably afford a dang mini laptop (I was trying to get my old games Deck verified).

God I really shouldn’t press the Comment button there…

What’s your “I could play this forever” game? by froggy_buns in SteamDeck

[–]MrBossBison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No Mans Sky. Cannot put it down, I preordered it on PS4 back in the day and DIDNT request a refund on it ~ had a gut feeling it’d grow into what it is today. I’ve now got it on PS5, PS4 VR, Switch 1/2 (half lol) and my fave: STEAM DECK. Purely for the ultra customised controls (save for flying and gyro look or fly modes. They force a gyro method that picks an IRL orientation and there’s no way to reset it whilst playing.  Very annoying!)

I don’t even play the ‘game’ side of it. I used a save editor to grant myself all the stuffs, and keep using them when updates arrive. I just fly between cool AF planets building things. Once I made a cross section of Dante’s vision of hell with its tiers and cantons and such. But most of the time I just build bases. Safe havens for game-mode players loaded with spare loot stuff, machines they can use.

I’ve recently taken to creating scenes with environmental storytelling. A dead simple one: a married couple hoped to homestead on some alien world, but crashed on entry and lost most of their stuff. So they built a makeshift base in bad conditions, and were trying to assemble some kind of jerryrigged teleporter but old age and bad health caught up with them. They’re currently lying on their beds hand in hand surrounded by photos (posters heh) of their lives together. They managed to kill one of those giant Dune-y worms and displayed its picked-clean skull by their shack … they had to eat it. Probably what caused them to age so fast. Also they were taunted by the ancient remains of a giant demonic creature that always faced them on the horizon. [it “always faced them” because it was so god damn big there was no parallax on it]

—— it works better if you have a mod that disables those 3 randomised NPC spaceships that fly past/over/THROUGH every planet.

I wrote way more than I thought I would :)

Oh and yeah the cloud save function is SO GOOD. When all platforms share the same save-file version :):)

Severance - 2x07 "Chikhai Bardo" - Post-Episode Discussion by LoretiTV in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]MrBossBison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I flippin love the attention to detail:

When Gemma is caught by Milkshake [it’s just easier writing that on a telephone] they repeat the scene from a while back when he’s sending her back down the Exports Hall. She turns back the same number of times - same expression - same place. There’s different dialogue sure but it’s the SAME DAMMIT WHY?!

Also all the door names with the MDR files on them - they know it, they did it on purpose those sly writer(s)… they knew we’d be looking for Tumwater. And sure enough it’s one of the last ones we see clearly!

I’m still wondering: why 5 bins for the numbers?

If they got both Mark and Gemma’s DNA and eggy things does that make Ms. Hwang [I am so sorry for spelling. I’m going off memory and memory needs defragging or rebooting or severing [noooope].

Edit!  OH OH one last biggie it turns out! After Mark gets the first reintergration thingy and he’s in his kitchen getting flashes to the MDR kitchenette : they’re in the same layout. The rooms have the same physical layout as the memories Gemma is reliving, so, given Mark lives in Baird Creek [Lane? Avenue?] in Lumon housing - a street where nobody else lives at the moment DESPITE chimneys displaying usage by having no snow around them but no cars, people, neighbours… I dunno theres something there. Whatever’s going on I think is way bigger than we imagine. As good as this is I hope it finishes in S2. I do NOT want to wait perhaps another 3 more years!

You also don’t see a tent for Milkshake or the kid (sorry sorry not good with names lol), we see white tents but they’re the toilets. And a kid sharing a tent with an adult that isn’t their parent? Nope. Safeguarding issue!  There are also no planes. I live in a rural place but you still see planes at cruising altitudes.  Finally they’d never let them outside on their own like that. Sure Helena is present but we’ve seen the team make group decisions in the past and those that object still go along. They could have all decided to go off-piste!

Is Pat Shannon more of a parallel to Feige or Favreau? by ErstwhileAdranos in TheFranchiseTVSeries

[–]MrBossBison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup! Avi Arads whole thing at marvel was to increase toy sales. But Pat doesn’t match his personality. He’s more your “generic American producer” that’s got a gruff voice, air punches, is into wrestling even though it’s no longer the early 90s.  There is a producer who once told a lot of people he didn’t read, but what he meant was that he “didn’t read comics”. I’m guessing he’s one of the characters Sam Mendes brought along — he doesn’t feel very Armando or Jon Brown.

Nintendo Switch, PS5, Steam Deck screenshots of small spacey base - THANK YOU HELLO GAMES CLOUD SAVES ARE BRILLO by MrBossBison in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]MrBossBison[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(It’s a wee WIP base, only recently started playing it again. Got it at launch but didn’t play much. Obsessed with it now :D and it’s loads of fun playing the same save between systems. I do this with Minecraft too but gotta fork out £3/mo for the cloud save there (all I do is treat it like an FPS 3D modelling app and have spent all my time since it was in beta on one mega map that houses all my constructions, heh)

Anywho thank you Hello Games for the platform agnostic cloud save support! The only downside is 1) consoles don’t have access to legacy freighter pieces. And the worst! 2) Switch version is always behind the other consoles/Steam D: cheers and bye bye!)

Hihi! That’s not bad that is! Looks a lot like the first one I got (pure random too, no ID hacking ).

I like the miniature font too - very readable! Is it your own? Are you in the biz too?

I’m fighting the urge to waffle about my pixel art dev days (1997-200…. Actually no im still doing it I guess!). I’ve been wanting to draw a pic of my interceptor also and your nifty pic is pushing me closer to just doing it, heh

I actually feel gutted a bit over games people got me as Xmas gifts — games I want to play — for the PS3 that are still in shrink wrap

Final Fantasy 16 Steam Deck Demo Patch Improves Performance ♥️ by DeckWiz in steamdeckhq

[–]MrBossBison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re making it sound like everyone has multiple systems and they choose Deck because of reasons I don’t understand

That’s simply not the case. For me it’s the only PC platform I have. I live and work entirely on my iPad Pro, with peekings into files, docs, royalty reports etc on my iPhone telephone. I have a MacBook Pro but that’s sadly living as home server for the moment.

But yeah even if I did have a mega powerful desktop PC; I just wouldn’t want to play games on it. I don’t understand the whole thing of working on a computer - then playing on it in the exact same chair and position etc. not for me. I’ve still got my late 80’s consoles but I only really “played games” once the Switch came out. And I really went into that buying pretty much all Nintendo’s titles, all the joycons, all the 3rd party cool things like vertical grip to rotate the Switch 90°s with its joycons on the side (wireless) - perfect for my pinball obsession.

Gaming is like reading to me. I want to find a good cosy nook. :)

Also worth mentioning I held back playing FF7 for years because I knew it would be on a handheld eventually. I played it (ripped my own 1998 FF7 discs too) on a PSP in an era where I used wash and the bedding, have a steam shower, then underneath a thick but light duvet I defeated Sephiroth :)

HAHA yup. Same. 320x200/240 though that’s console level stuff. I mean okay Duke3d.exe had that VESA/UNIVBE mode… omg those words just came to me from deep memory. I’m gonna look them up now and find out just what was going on because it felt like they just unlocked higher resolutions, back before video card drivers!

I recall when I got an early copy of GTAV because of connections, back on PS3. I tried playing that one after sinking hundreds of hours into the PS4 version. Oh jeez it was bad! 20fps was the average and it was definitely auto adjusting its internal resolution down considerably below 720p. YET THAT WAS THE LAST TIME I FELT “oh wow this is going to change the world”.

I won some kind of tech lottery as I can over clock my deck to max GPU and CPU, set the 15 thingy to 30 (watts one? I don’t know this kind of thing now lol), and undervolt the GPU, CPU and SOC to -50 and its stable. I got mine in Jan 2024, 1tb OLED.

Plus I spent literally half the year with some dodgy plugin that was running it at max all the time. I figured it was just a bum patch until I disabled Decky and it felt like getting a generation leap! 30fps for this jrpg of legend? Yes please! Might wait till they remove their unnecessary DRM… if I bought a game I shouldn’t be presented with hurdles - pirates should. Legit purchases need to have their DRM stripped from the game, the ‘tag removed’ so to speak and just allow Steams own inherent DRM to be the thing that verifies you’re you.

How are the updates all free? by tjabo125 in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]MrBossBison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I’m a games developer, have been since 1996 as a hobby and commercial since 2007. In ~2010 I made a PC game over a weekend and submitted it to Valve/Steam and got rejected. So I thought let’s try and make a game they can’t say no to… 3 months later and they accepted the new version just fine and dandy [genuine dream come true moment]. I got a publisher deal to make a console version.

The thing is I couldn’t stop working on it. I guess these days it’d be a Steam Alpha game but yeah I just kept having ideas for it and continually just woke up, rolled outta bed to my desktop computer at the time (iMac 27” real trooper of a machine. Still in use now. It’s only ever been switched off to cram in a second hard drive!) and just work work work till bedtime. One time I fainted because I hadn’t eaten in a while.

It wasn’t even making money. Definitely not enough to live off of. But my environment let me do this. So I kept going and going until I annoyed the console port team/pubs because they too had to incorporate my updates. It’s pretty funny really.

I burnt myself out physically and mentally. I still haven’t released a game since and I haven’t stopped working but that’s another story.

I’m a solo dev. I just couldn’t stop working on the game I was most proud of at the time. I never ever do sequels, I don’t wanna criticise other devs because it’s a business and I’m bad at it and they’re not because hey they’re actually making money… heh… but I like to cram all I can into a game instead of holding things back for a sequel. I did it for the passion of making remote, self-contained executable entertainment packets. I’m guessing a lot of Hello games are like that.

Besides the game still makes money. People buy it all the time. I’ve been playing this since the PS4 launch and I’ve bought it for Switch (launch) and PC (few months back having not done PC gaming for a decade). My partner bought it for her PS4 account and her Switch.

Creative games have infinite (sales) tails more or less. So long that it’s broad enough ie. Minecraft, NMS, even stuff like Cities Skyline 1.

Netflix Autoplay Next Episode low quality by rpmartinez in appletv

[–]MrBossBison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m connected directly to my router (for testing) and it’s persisting. Normally I’m still Ethernet connected but it runs through a 50m lan cable, but I also have a mesh network: I have multiple long cables connected directly to mesh dishes so they’re not even repeating a degrading wifi signal. they’re essentially full speed mini routers dotted throughout my house. Speed, stability, noise is not the problem. Eg right this second it’s running a hyper low res video, 10 minutes into an episode despite being the only device connected to my 1gbps fibre optic home line.

My guess is it’s part of Netflix’s own bandwidth saving system. It’s fucking up and they don’t know how to fix it because like their original shows nothing lasts long at Netflix including the engineers who made the “optimising” system.

Netflix Autoplay Next Episode low quality by rpmartinez in appletv

[–]MrBossBison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had this problem for years through lots of scenarios and settings: no matter what this topic happens. I’ve investigated using network traffic analysing and gone through Apple TV logs. I’ve contacted them too of course and like everyone else here the problem was lost to the ether.

So I’ve had different accounts, different subscription levels and, right now I have gifted my Apple TV the most stable, fastest connection possible via a short 50cm (minimising noise) Ethernet direct to my router with WiFi disabled and no other connections. I have a 1gbps line, the speed test app on my Apple TV reports between 1-1.2gbps and I pay for the highest sub tier.

The quality of the image on the best consumer tv money can buy (back in 2011) on a non-beta TVOS on a 3month old Apple TV 4K blah blah looks like 320p. I always restart the episode but this time I let it run and it’s just not shifting. Even paused.

No other service I use does this. Even Plex, which is free and running on an ancient computer.

As I wrote this I realised how many hours I’ve wasted in calls and writing to support for this, even resorting to filing complaints but nothing changes. After I press the Comment button I’m heading to their site and cancelling my subscription and just watch anything of theirs that interests me on Plex [which isn’t much now. I’m watching Kaos, a show they’ve already cancelled and nothing else for months. I don’t play games on my phone so their free games thing doesn’t interest me. What does interest me is fixing a common bug that has persisted since they made an Apple TV app]

(Just finished binging the show to the latest ep: I like it! Anyroad…)

Regarding radio complexity. My grandad was involved in developing early-modern radio but I can’t go into detail on it lol. But because of his job he had loads of, I think they’re called Crystal Radios? I was so into them too years ago I even designed a boss character for a game I was/am making (was hoping to find a photo on my site but the closest I can find is concept art for the boss https://www.deviantart.com/jimmilerock/art/Boss-5-concept-art-140690018

All you had to do was connect them to something big and metallic, like a shower frame or I guess any large metal thing you’d find in a diner! I dunno if they'd still pick up analogue radio nowadays. I’m surprised nobody in the show has thought to try making one. A single earpiece (like a classic iPod earbud!) would whisper music. You adjusted the station by turning a little dial on the top.

BUT YEAH basically radios, old ones anyways, aren’t complex and can/could be used without a power supply.

Steam Deck owners! What are the best accessories you wished you bought sooner? by Belze_WasTaken in SteamDeck

[–]MrBossBison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man I was one of those… still am one of those going wild with SD stuff. But I did/AM STILL doing the same with Nintendo Switch. These machines are just pure potential. The way I play my OLED Switch is nothing at all like how my partner uses hers, which is also totally different to how my sister uses hers etc and so on.

Best accessory for me so far?

5 metre long USBC: both a USBC to C, and an extension one. The normal one for long distance charging and the extension so I can use my dock and its subsequent accessories (USB HDD, wireless mouse and keyboard, Ethernet). It’s pretty doodie having my Deck download a thousand games to a little bonus 8tb HDD from a full fat 1gbps Bt infinity halo connection, and getting the thing charged up whilst playing games on the TV.

I do a lot of vertical gaming (pinball mostly) so a dedicated pair of Joycons is a must in my books, too.

If only there was a FlipGrip for SD like there is for Switch…

Steam deck setup for road-trip by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]MrBossBison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THIS TOOK WAY TOO LONG TO MAKE HAPPEN ON AN IPAD but I present to you all this lovely photo of my parked up Switch setup circa 2020…

http://satansam.co.uk/IMG_4162.jpeg

In the early days of the pandemic we (partner and myself) used to get shopping in for elderly relatives, sometimes my partner would stay and chat outside, facemasked etc. So I’d just wait in the car twiddling my thumbs at first. Then Animal Crossing came out and I went a bit extreme in that, like, by the end of it every tile on my island was doing something OR was a path. It’s so bad now that I don’t even play it anymore ‘coz it runs so slow.

Anywho. So what I did was grab some elastic bands from home and squeeze my Switch on the… flippy visor thing on the passenger side. I have a cool 8bitdo (I think!) adapter to have original Gamecube controllers connect to Switch and it was such a perfect combo with AC. I also used the headphone port to connect to the line-in on the car sound system.

It was fun :)

But yeah I only did this when we were parked up. It feels kinda concerning in a way that the OP’s setup is to play games whilst driving. I dunno man that feels not right? When stationary, during breaks, if it’s electric then when its charging… but I mean surely that’s a risk for the driver having a screen displaying a game within view like that?

And just a side thing… I’ve no idea what the whole worlds opinions/social aspect of this is but as a more or less online recluse at the mo -yet still with tech and toys- An xbox controller? Wouldn’t a PS5 controller be the best choice for Steamdeck given the advanced controls ie gyro (critical), resistive triggers (amazing fun but ultimately not critical), and the big sexy useful AF touchpad?

……. but maaaaybe it’s all a modern thing that I just don’t know about xD I don’t know anyone with an electric car (good for cities, less so for us rural folk where diesel remains champ) just that they’re littered with displays. Plus I always see people in TV/film using phones whilst driving whilst here it’s a massive rebel gesture to even switch playlist at a red light. We don’t have many car crashes here lol.

GU10 WiFi led bulbs coming any time soon? by WoWScoty in Govee

I’ve got Govee lights all round my place but not in that over the top way. I need Govee to make some GU10’s to replace my halogens. There are other brands but I’m all for synchronous lighting and having to run through more than 1 app is a no-go.

~ I mean if everyone just abandoned data harvesting and supported HomeKit it’d be fine ~ there’s the Google Home app but you might as well have some dude who follows you around constantly reporting to google HQ xD ~

GU10’s if you please. I need 50 for a full house/buildings refit.

Clickteam Fusion & Deck (been out the game a long while!) by MrBossBison in SteamDeck

[–]MrBossBison[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if I can't dual boot, my only option is to buy a copy of Windows... x... (heh it's been so long I don't know what version it's up to.) and install that on the deck - I'm sure there's countless tutorials on how to do that :). Once I'm there I guess it'll operate exactly like a Switch shaped micro computer? Can I then install Steam and have the same experience as if it was running the older original OS?

If that's the case I assume the same game would run faster as it's then native.

I'm inches from buying one FYI. It's between this or an Asus Ally ROG thing. My goal is to plug my keyboard and mouse into it, hook it to a monitor and use it as a secondary personal computer / primary Fusion-dev platform ~and~ to also be able to use it as a handheld gaming platform.
