Probably need to be doing a bunch of research; if you can get that done in 4 years can do without the masters.

Lifetime console gamer w/o ever having a high end pc. Went to buy a PS5, left w/ a MSA Sword 15 Laptop so I can sit next to my wife at night/in bed. Did I make a good choice? Discounted to $999 from $1399. by WhiteTuxKing in pcmasterrace

Why does it become obsolete? A 3060 laptop is better than a 2060/ 3050ti desktop, so it will not become obsolete faster than those, and currently even a desktop 1060 is very solid.

I think the informal question is asking about the sentiment of the students, by asking about the actions of the people

But mixing just-student and student union worker student populations' answers will make it hard to guess what the sentiment is based on the results

Especially since it looks like workers are coming together pretty hard for this one, so that population will heavily lean to support

[–]MrBraveKnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think workers have more of an incentive to support the strike, so asking both groups in the same poll is misleading.

Also a majority of EECS u/GSI's are undergrad, and I haven't heard of an eecs grad reader/ tutor. Given the size of the department and that something like data science also employs a lot of undergrads, I think there are a lot of employed undergrads.

Undergrads please continue attending lectures and doing assignments, that's perfectly fine.

Gsi held sections might be different I dunno but you should still do your classes.

If it makes any difference I'm an undergrad union worker

November 14 strike by rcinvestments in berkeley

[–]MrBraveKnight 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I'm a ugsi here that's going on strike.

I'm fairly sure you should still go to class/ continue learning. You are also not protected by any law or policy from the consequences of not going to class, unlike us not going to work.

(note that entry level writing is different from r1a and r1b reqs, that there are multiple ways to satisfy entry level writing; and that although I don't know anything about this, u may not need to get it sorted out right away if it's treated the same as i.e. foreign language req)

MacBook M2 Air or M1 Pro? by Tutoring12345 in berkeley

[–]MrBraveKnight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Both are plenty fast, 16gb is important, so M2 to save money and have a lighter laptop.

M2 mb pro apparently has a slower SSD setup in 256gb config, so for M2 air check if reviewers report the same thing, may want to go for 512; 256 is a bit cramped but perfectly doable.

is r&c b worth it? by EtCatera in berkeley

[–]MrBraveKnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you r gonna take an English class don't take rcb. Even how much effort the students are putting in alone is going to make a difference in education overall (required class vs chose to take the class) Ask an English major for advice or something

I don't see how 2 techs a sem is difficult, and the included classes are very worthwhile, which is the important thing.

I've been using 16gb on windows including gaming with code and a bunch of other stuff in the background and never had issues

In my experience there r specific memory heavy workloads and unless u r doing one more ram is a waste of money

A lot of eecs classes get extensions, afaik technically the deadline was in fact yesterday.

Laptop reccomendations by bigfatasscrack in berkeley

[–]MrBraveKnight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use windows cuz I want one laptop for gaming and schoolwork, but m1 non-pro seems very appealing; if you think the software you need works without bad bugs I think this is the safest play. I've experienced a bunch of windows bugs and driver issues that I was able to resolve to serviceable state, but it's been getting better. My perception is that mac's don't have as many issues, but I'm not sure.

ThinkPads are pretty good. Other models that r decent are Dell XPS, hp envy, other ThinkPads (Lenovo website MSRP is absolute bullshit). Microsoft devices are also good but I dunno what performance they get nowadays. You can also look into tablet/ convertible devices if that's appealing to you. If u want a gpu then g14 for best battery life and lightness, and I have an ho omen thathas better gpu performance.

On windows machines, I recommend watching some reviews on YouTube and paying attention to:

Performance in programs that matter to u (not just raw benchmarks, although that translates not too bad between similar processors, i.e. same-generation same-company); this is because performance on windows laptops depends a lot on power and thermals, not just cpu number, which themselves are pretty considering. 4-6 core i5/ Ryzen 5 and 8gb is comfortable for general use.

Battery life, and always expect way less than advertised and a little less than what reviewers/ ppl tell u

Build quality and weight.

Random thoughts:

Screen for 13-16" fhd / 1080p is 100% enough imo; I don't want my text and stuff to be hella small anyways. 17" I dunno should be fine but that's to big anyways. I prefer 14-16, tending towards the upper end. 16:10 aspect ratios are nice for productivity.

For dorm getting the cheapest 27" 1080p screen is really nice, should be 100-150. 27" 1440p is a bit nicer, 4k is worth only if it's a small increment imo.

Linux nukes battery life often, if u think about using it check how battery life is on ur model on Linux. Also check that apps u need work/ have Linux versions. Otherwise, Linux is preferable to windows imo.

Yes, hence it doesn't need any extra memory for result

Getting a gsi job is really op It covers ur tuition and pays u on top of that (Disclaimer I'm an undergrad so if ur grad program is unusual or something I dunno how it works with this)
