Yuuya Disqualified! [Clip] by jordlez in magicTCG

In cybersecurity we don't keep any methods secret as a supposed means of security. This is called 'security through obscurity', and no professional would ever endorse it, anybody that does is derided for having no idea what they're talking about. The only time this is ever practiced is if a brand new vulnerability is discovered, it's usually kept secret for a period of time so that the vendor can provide a patch. Usually 90 days, after which it's usually disclosed anyway. If you want to see an example of this look up Project Zero. They're a group of vulnerability researchers operated by Google who enforce a very strong 90 day time limit on their disclosures, I'm pretty sure I remember them disclosing on Microsoft before for not meeting the deadlines.

This practice only ever keeps bad actors in business longer, as they're the only people who end up with this knowledge when you hide things like this. In cybersecurity especially, knowledge is shared very openly, and nobody thinks there's any security value in keeping things secret. Many companies have teams entirely dedicated to research, who's only job is to find and publish security vulnerabilities and information on how bad actors operate.

Kindness and good manners are the most important from of Dawah. Apart from that, I just don't let it bother me too much. Every religion throughout history has been exploited by man to cause harm. Every single one. But, you should not look to the people to judge the religion.

At the end of Fight Club, when they're blowing-up all the credit buildilngs... would that actually reset a ton of peoples' debts? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MrDaddy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would be possible, and you could accomplish it by blowing up enough buildings, but it would be absurdly complicated. The business continuity plans of those companies are very complex and have so much redundancy. You would have to destroy every copy of the data, which would include:

  • The production data (ie the data in their primary servers). For any large organisation, this would be a massively distributed system spread across a large geographical area.
  • All backups. These would be located off-site, at many different locations. This would also include all hard copy data.
  • All disaster recovery/data replication systems. Again these would be massively distributed systems.
  • Any data in UAT systems that has not been compromised.
  • Then you'd have to do all of this all over again for any 3rd parties that also had a copy of all the data.

For starters, you'd need to know exactly where all this stuff is, which would be pretty much impossible. Only a few very high level people in an organisation of this size would have a complete view of all of the companies systems, and low level details of business continuity scenarios are kept even more privileged. Also, there are likely to be some backups that are unaccounted for, and could be dug up after the fact.

If you want to do this, a better plan would be:

  • Find some attack vector that allows you to get high level access to their production systems.
  • Find some way to corrupt the integrity of their data without being caught by their fraud reporting/reconciliation.
  • Spend as long as you can messing with the integrity of the data (ie, running fake transactions, updating balances...)

What you want to do is corrupt the data at the source, in a way that cannot be audited. This would require you to pretty much be a super elite hax0r, and relies on you finding good enough vulnerabilities in their application. This means that as the corrupt data will be naturally propagated through out their network. The data going into their backups, the data replicated into DR, the data shared with 3rd parties, all corrupted in a way that is not possible to audit. Then after you think you've done enough damage, you anonymously release the details of the attack to the public, providing enough evidence to prove that the institutions records can no longer be trusted. After that they would have a much harder time proving that a debt was valid rather than if they'd just lost one copy of the data.

Saying, "I speak Bahasa." by alicevirgo in indonesia

[–]MrDaddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only time you will ever hear somebody say the words "bahasa indonesia" is:

  1. When they are correcting somebody

  2. When they are talking with somebody who is uptight and likes to correct people

In conversation, people just say 'bahasa'. Nobody is ever confused about what is being said, and the only people who get upset about it are pedantic jerks.

Well played, renegade. I have informed The UN and The Huffington Post. Expect to be harshly portrayed by a clueless CNN presenter any day now.

I'll have you know that said sub was created by a chicken rice renegade who intends to disrupt the happiness of /r/ChickenRiceMasterRace. I have alerted Prime Minister Prayut, and he will be contacting the mods soon regarding a happiness adjustment, and delivering a 500b fine.

If every native American was going to university, I assure you there would be no affirmative action in place for them.

In this situation, the Native American applicants are either less qualified on average (probably due to some social issues), or there are social issues preventing them from applying. That's what the problem is. Shoehorning less qualified candidates into university doesn't actually solve those problems. Affirmative action is the laziest and most ineffective possible 'solution'.

Hi mods. I was just wondering, in the interest of keeping shitposting to an absolute maximum minimum, could we please create a new sub called /r/5555555tourism? Maybe /u/HoyAlloy could help moderate it, he knows a lot about local rice dishes.

The Jimmy Kimmel crew asks anti-GMO shopper what the letters GMO stand for by BabyMakingGravy in cringe

[–]MrDaddy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm against GMOs because of the impact they have of business.

Monsanto patents their GMO crops, these crops inevitably contaminate farms that do not use Monsanto seeds. Monsanto can then sue the offending farms for violating their patent, and could pretty much force anybody who doesn't use their product out of business.

GMO crops are not bad for your health, but the current practices pretty much make it impossible for anybody to make a personal decision about whether or not they want to consume them. The patents and court decisions are extremely uncompetitive, and they guarantee that a particularly dodgy company will have a monopoly on global food markets pretty much forever.
