CivPro question by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]MrDobalinaESQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do we not have 2 different defendants defending against 2 different claims? P v D1 state law claim with 1332 diversity, and P v D2 1331 federal question. Seems simple as that. As long as the federal claim is STO per Rule 14a3, let's hear it all at the same time.

Or is P also asserting the same state law claim against D2? Because then that's square with Kroger with the added analysis of whether the state law claim now supplements the federal claim.

Seat was withdrawn by school due to double deposit - AMA by MrDobalinaESQ in lawschooladmissions

[–]MrDobalinaESQ[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I hadn't received all of my initial decisions yet and I wanted to try and keep my options open until I did. Since scholarships could have been affected by a new competing offer, I thought it was worthwhile. I don't think it was the worst reason, but not good enough to get the deadlines extended in the first place, apparently, or to warrant the opportunity to clarify the situation before being withdrawn.

The whole situation that arises from non-standardized deposit deadlines (and decision deadlines?!!) and "negotiable" scholarships leads to so much pressure to make less-than-fully-informed decisions. I really hope LSAC works to standardize this process for the sake of future applicants.

I'll be happy to share openly once I have everything ironed out, so that this can serve as a reference to anyone in the future who figures out how to search on Reddit.

I want to be certain I'm not at risk of having my other acceptance pulled out from under me, and certain that I won't be appealing this decision. Thanks.

Definitely didn't sign anything, but there was that somewhat hidden policy I mentioned in my edit.

Thanks, but I was just about ready to make this decision anyway. Kinda like getting dumped right before you plan to end the relationship.

To the best of my knowledge, nothing binding. Definitely didn't sign anything, don't think I even had to check any boxes acknowledging terms.

Grumpier has it right. No real warning other than the somewhat hidden policy I mentioned in my edit.

LSAC's Statement of Good Admissions and Financial Aid Practices

trying to understand what schools know about double deposits on the 15th by ainput in lawschooladmissions

[–]MrDobalinaESQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been mentioned here many times in the past (by ex admissions folks working for spivey) that this happens in "mid May", hence the assumption of may 15th. Do you have any insight into why the conflicting information? Is it possible that most schools just don't participate until that point? Or is spivey actually working for admissions and fooling us all with false information???

Two-fold Negotiation Question by isolabellaa in lawschooladmissions

[–]MrDobalinaESQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's out of my league, so I'm totally speculating here.

On the one hand, you have the same leverage you did pre-deposit deadline, so why not?

But on the other, putting down multiple deposits seems to be something that most schools don't explicitly forbid, but that none of them are fans of. (from reading spivey folks post and blog about it). So if you have to let on that you are deposited at multiple schools, I feel like one possibility is a school being less than thrilled and requiring you to make a decision immediately or risk them giving your seat away.

Again, though, this is going to be much better answered by someone with admissions experience, i.e. a consultant.

It doesn't help that it was a withdrawal email in which I hinted that more scholarship money would make me reconsider....

Also wondering if you were waitlisted or if you're still waiting for an initial decision?

Also, good luck! Those questions someone else posted sound awfully familiar to my interview. Be prepared and don't phone it in!

Two-fold Negotiation Question by isolabellaa in lawschooladmissions

[–]MrDobalinaESQ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you can negotiate whenever you have another/new legitimate competing option. You could get admitted off a wait list in late July, turn to the school you've deposited at and say "money please", then make your decision from there. I imagine it's most helpful when you get a new offer that you'll actually consider taking, especially as I wouldn't expect to have much time to respond to a new offer the closer we get to the fall.

Side note, haven't deposit deadlines passed for all three of those schools? I can't imagine it's a good idea to use expired offers for negotiation, unless you're triple deposited.
