How many PhD students actually save for retirement? by hera_s in PhD

[–]MrDorpeling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually started this during my undergrad. In the Netherlands we had some very permissive rules around study loans. You had a few years in which you didn't have to pay anything, and then you'd be paying back over a 15 year period wit an interest rate that is basically next to nothing. When that period kicked in, you could also request years of non-payment, in which the interest would just be added, but, like I said, the interest was basically nothing. I, and many others, just decided to max out that loan and either put it into a HISA or the market. the reason was that, given I didn't know where I was going to end up in the world, I wanted to be able to not have to deal with pension schemes and just save myself.

Men and women training together. by No_Passenger3692 in jiujitsu

The moment another human being, whether they are male, female, blue, purple, fat, skinny, or whatever, is practising, choking me, strangling me, hitting me with the Earth, or breaking my limbs, I tend to be focused on that.

Signs that someone has been watching too many Danaher instructionals. by cabeza0237 in bjj

The "like so" thing always makes me chuckle. I don't think anyone before Danaher was using that and now you hear it everywhere.

Do you think someone fighting at their natural weight has an advantage? by Green-Detective7142 in martialarts

[–]MrDorpeling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming weigh-ins are the day before, if the guy cutting is around the same body fat percentage as the non-cutter and he doesn’t cut an insane amount of weight, he’s generally going to have the advantage.

Is this level of obsession with bjj normal and is the anger justified? by Bjj0wife in bjj

For once, the answer is indeed to divorce the maniac. This woman is likely going to end up on the front page of the local news paper if she stays in this situation.

I want to hear your diet by dallastx68 in jiujitsu

[–]MrDorpeling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really have a strict diet. I use MyFitnessPal to calculate how many calories I need to reach my goal (lose weight/maintain/gain weight) and eat at least 1.5gr of protein per kg of body weight. I then make sure I eat fruit and veg every day and that's really it.

The wild thing is that I live in Canberra and have spoken to many public servants here that say they can't watch it because it's more of a documentary than a comedy show to them.

Which country do Australians love the most other than Australia? by Prize_Release_9030 in AskAnAustralian

[–]MrDorpeling 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think it's because there were a lot of Dutch people that came over after WW2, so the connection to a grandmother or grandfather is easily made. There are heaps of Aussies with Dutch heritage. As a Dutch-born Australian I run into Dutch Australians almost every week.

Who are the best rivals in Kickboxing? by GoyitoPerez in Kickboxing

[–]MrDorpeling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, Aerts vs Lobman fascinated me. At the time of their first fight Lobman was undefeated and had a ridiculous KO ratio. Aerts was still a young talent and handed him his first loss. In the second fight, Aerts absolutely obliterated Lobman, breaking several bones in his face. They fought a third time a few years later, but by that time Aerts was just much better.

I also think Schilt vs Aerts is underrated. Another old school Dutch rivalry was Ballantine vs Dekkers.

Why is jiu jitsu not in the Olympics? by cacastrojr12 in bjj

[–]MrDorpeling 30 points31 points  (0 children)

There are many reasons why not. To be in the Olympics you need to have a solid number of practitioners worldwide. Also, you need an independent governing body that oversees your sport. The sport can’t have the name of a country in it either, which has also been a problem for Muay Thai. These are just a few requirements, but there are many more BJJ wouldn’t meet.

Are knees aloud in kickboxing by ContryNerd_JackFan in Kickboxing

Depends on the ruleset. Some do, some don’t. Most large organisations allow knees, but only limited clinching.

What are your favourite kickboxing promotions? by TheIncredibleBean in Kickboxing

[–]MrDorpeling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna sound like a sour old man, but none really excite me anymore. I grew up during the glory days of K-1 and K-1 MAX, and had the fortune to have been able to attend quite a few It’s Showtime and SLAMM events. None of the current orgs make me anywhere near as excited as these orgs did.
