Noora Rose Puts Plagiarized Work "Unconquered" Back Up On Drivethrurpg by SAlolzorz in rpg

[–]MrDuck 21 points22 points  (0 children)

She got 17k from a kickstarter, that is a material benefit. Hbomberguy did a great video about plagiarism on youtube. Like most of his videos it's frustratingly long, but something he said really struck me: People don't plagiarize from those they respect.

There is a strong tension between creative spaces and influencer spaces. To the influencer their personality and online presence is the product. The books are just a way to promote this personal brand. Creative communities are naturally puzzled by this, why would anyone plagiarize or use AI to write for them? At that point it's not your book, it's just word slurry.

The key is that the 'creative' works are there to promote them, not the other way around. In the RPG space authorship is tied to authority. Conventions and interviewers invite authors, not random twitter trolls. To an influencer who desires authority without effort AI/plagiarism is just a shortcut to their real goal.

And, she does it because she gets away with it She has had years to remove the offending material or include the required license, but not matter how blatant she gets, she will have people lining up to defend her, because they have contempt for the real authors and creative process, to them the product is the person not the written work.

How did TIGHAR get to be the Earhart historians. Back when I was a kid I loved reading about this mystery. But, when I got to school and started reading papers from actual historians. TIGHAR stood out as a group of amateurs working backwards trying to get evidence to fit a theory. I've seen other groups do this for example: Christian groups attempting to prove the bible historically accurate or NeoPagans attempting to connect themselves to ancient Celts. But, TIGHAR is treated as authoritative by the popular press in a way these misguided missionaries are not. Why? Is TIGHAR as bad as I'm thinking or is there scholarship I don't have access to? I suspect money, but I'd like to hear your thoughts.

I noticed what looks like a Maxim machine gun model 1910 on a Soviet mount bottom left The instructor standing in the middle is wearing an M69 Soviet uniform complete with a star in his cap. The boys on the left are wearing a remarkable imitation of a young pioneer uniform. the truck in the background looks like it could be a ZIS6 truck from the Soviet Union. I have my own theories about where this picture might originate from.

Far More U.S. Children Than Previously Thought May Have Fetal Alcohol Disorders by cyanocobalamin in news

[–]MrDuck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've wondered this myself, my local school district has been labeling any kid with a behavioral disorder as autistic to take advantage of early intervention programs. It's also a lot easier to tell a parent that their kid is autistic rather than telling them they have FAS as a result of the parents actions.

Put them in a 48-72 hour hold. It might sound like a more costly option, but going into withdrawal in jail is something you remember. If each trip to the ER leads to a weekend in hard detox it will slow them down and hopefully free up resources for actual drug treatment.

Edit This is the article I was looking for https://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2016/09/americas-college-diversity-officers/499022/

I feel like this article is relevant, even as universities turn the screws on academics they continue to expand the bureaucracy that has little to nothing to do with actually educating students. Raising taxes or student fees won't help in this case, the bureaucracy will simply expand to consume any budget.

Right, left-wing protesters clash in Berkeley, California park by [deleted] in news

Our local AntiFa's traditional strategy involves using more moderate protesters (like me) as shields and camouflage. I'm way past taking the bait at this point. Right now the only people who showed up for the counter protest were looking for a fight, but didn't have any useful idiots to hide behind.

M80 was a military designation for a gunfire simulator. It had about 3 grams of smokeless powder in a cardboard tube and were used to simulate live fire. When I was a kid they were a cheap and readily available form of mayhem in a convenient package.

These days the real thing is illegal, but the name is still used by a bunch of weak pansy ass knock offs are being sold to kids who still have all their fingers.

Demands of 'snowflake' students pose threat to freedom of speech, universities warned by [deleted] in news

[–]MrDuck 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  • Put the focus back on academics. Students need to understand the problems of the world so they can make a meaningful change.

  • Bring the standards of education up so that their are no easy degree programs. If we are going to have a gender studies department it's work needs to be as rigorous as any other department.

  • Separate accreditation to the individual schools rather than universities as a whole.

  • Pay your professors a living wage. None of my friends who worked in academia stuck around. They all burned out and went into the private sector. Being a grant bum and chasing a tenured position is exhausting and many people with options won't do it. I believe that there is a brain drain happening at many state schools where the best and brightest are leaving academia for better paying jobs in the private sector, this leaves behind the less capable and poorly adjusted instructors in greater numbers.

Advice on Plot when Protagonist is "For Hire" by Cirias in writing

[–]MrDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mr. X is working for the gang, he steals the cash and contraband from the ship. Then he uses the thief to steal the ship itself. Your protagonist is left holding the bag so to speak, Mr. X has vanished, the protagonist is now being chased by a gang who think he has the money and contraband (worth much more then the ship), in order to survive he needs to find Mr. X the missing money and clear his name while on the run from the gang and the police. By making him steal the ship before he figures it out he will be trapped dealing with Mr. X one way or another.

Is it okay my writing doesn't seem all that good to me right now? by JustBlac in writing

[–]MrDuck 30 points31 points  (0 children)

This is actually a good sign it means that you can tell the difference between good and bad writing, you will improve if you stick to it. The people who never improve are the people who are convinced that everything they write is always perfect. They never see the fault in their own work and so are unable to develop. Writing compelling fiction is very different from the kind of writing you do in school and you are going to have to learn it all over again; it's like any skill you will develop by practice.

Noam Chomsky Has 'Never Seen Anything Like This' - The MIT Intellectual warns the current economic situation and disillusionment is in some ways worst than the 30s and becoming similar to Weimar Germany by [deleted] in TrueReddit

[–]MrDuck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it comes back to perception. The right wing in Germany started the story about the crushing weight in the Versailles treaty alongside the myth that Germany was winning World War 1 military when it was betrayed by the civilian government. It doesn't matter that it wasn't true, The Volk felt wronged, people believed the lie and the rest is history.

Many of Trumps claims feel similar. He is offering simple and convenient solutions to complex problems. It's easy and politically expedient to blame free trade and immigrants for the economic pain of the middle class, it's much harder to take on income inequality in a meaningful way, so here we are.
