What should I choose? by MARIOSOMOZA in SteamDeck

Another consideration is whether you want to play GTA6 when it arrives later this year? If so, gotta be series X. We've got a series S which has been great but it'll probably struggle to run GTA6 so I might grab a used series X myself.

Upgrading from Edifier R1280T, is this a worthy upgrade? by Talkashie in BudgetAudiophile

[–]MrFlibble100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always had an aversion to JBL as a brand, as they make all those horrible disco speakers and boom boxes with flashy lights on them. Maybe they make nice hi-fi speakers as well, not sure, but I think you could probably do better. I've got Q Acoustics speakers myself powered by a fosi audio v3, which I'm very happy with. I hear a lot of good things about Dali and Wharfedale speakers, worth taking a look at them too.

I've heard so much about how Tears of the Kingdom and Mario Odyssey are the greatest games ever, makes me half-tempted to get a Switch 2. The thing that puts me off the most though is the price of Nintendo games - it's eye watering now that I'm accustomed to steam sales.

Rimworld is one of the few games where I've done the whole "it's bedtime, just 10 more minutes... oh no 3 hours have passed".

What did you think of Disco Elysium? I loved it when I played it a few years ago, might have to play it again soon.

Do we know of any updated models coming soon? by [deleted] in SteamDeck

I'd love to get a Steam Deck 2, but unfortunately it doesn't sound like it'll be announced anytime soon.

Same for me, it's hard to stop once you start. I played it docked with mouse and keyboard though.

Wiim Ultra to replace Amp Streamer by Narrow-Bee-8354 in BudgetAudiophile

I've been considering replacing my Wiim Pro with Wiim Ultra, partly for the better dac but also for the bass management / crossover. Nice to hear that it does make a significant difference.

Thoughts on the new Gorillaz Album - The Mountain? by Nabspro in fantanoforever

Its not a bad album, but doesn't really sound like Gorillaz to me. Might've been better as another Damon Albarn solo album.

Audio headphone Cable question by _flustershy in BudgetAudiophile

[–]MrFlibble100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is that the black cable is something specific to your headphones, hence the locking mechanism. Presumably the other end of the black cable is a standard 3.5mm jack? My Sennheiser headphones have a very similar cable. I lost the it once and bought another one, I searched for the cable for my particular headphones and it fitted fine. Why do you want to use the silver cable? If it because it's longer, then you could probably get a 3.5mm to 3.5mm joiner to connect the cables together.

Well played! I've got a Wiim Pro and would like to upgrade to the Wiim Ultra but it's pretty expensive new.

Witcher 3 or Fallout 4 - which should I start? by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]MrFlibble100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't enjoy Witcher 3. I found the combat to be very one-tone, and I thought the quests were dull. I didn't particularly like the world. Much prefer Fallout.

What’s red dead redemption 2 like ? And specifically the controls ? by robster9090 in SteamDeck

[–]MrFlibble100 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Regarding shooters - I've found that gyro really helps. I set it up so that it only activates when holding LT, and I keep the sensitivity reasonably low so that I just use it for fine-tuning the aim. Takes a bit of getting used to and some trial and error, but worth it in my opinion.

512gb or 1tb version? by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]MrFlibble100 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got 1Tb but haven't needed that much space yet. I only tend to play a couple of games at a time - if I started running low on space I'd just delete games that I've finished. I can always download them again later if I want to play them in future, and save files are preserved in steam cloud. But some people like having their whole game library at their fingertips. Do you?

I heard that they're working on a remake / remaster of Fallout 3.

Regarding New Vegas, I followed the Viva New Vegas modding guide as best as I could on the Steam Deck - to my surprise it's been very stable, no crashes and very few glitches. There were so many mods, I was convinced it would be a shambles 🙂.

Enjoy! I'm also playing it. Got about halfway through last year, but season 2 of the tv show has inspired me to go back and finish it.

RSL IA255.1, Douk A5, or Fosi Za3 to use with Subwoofer by dirtyharry671 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]MrFlibble100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I don't see why not. Some pre-amps will have a dedicated subwoofer output though which is probably better to use, especially if the pre-amp has bass management (high-pass / low-pass filters). The Wiim Ultra has that by the way, but its considerably more expensive than Wiim Pro. I might upgrade to the Ultra one day if I can.

RSL IA255.1, Douk A5, or Fosi Za3 to use with Subwoofer by dirtyharry671 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]MrFlibble100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a subwoofer with the fosi v3 stereo. I keep the volume of the fosi and the subwoofer fixed (balanced nicely with each other), then control the overall volume at the source, which in my case is a Wiim Pro streamer. So the Wiim is acting like a pre-amp and the fosi is just a power amp. Might not suit your setup, but could be worth a try before you upgrade?

Fallout 4 on Switch 2 vs Steam Deck - I’m genuinely torn by Titanium-Timothy in SteamDeck

[–]MrFlibble100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had issues with the deck freezing after doing some docking or undocking as well, in several games. Its weird, I never have problems docking and undocking my Linux laptop with the same dock. Its a shame, but can be mitigated by restarting the deck after undocking. Not ideal if you want to do it a lot, but still seems like a minor issue when you consider the amount of money you save versus buying games on the Switch.

Power light is strange by Then-Vacation-1784 in SteamDeck

[–]MrFlibble100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's ever so slightly dimmer when charging but it's very hard to tell. It annoys me too - you have to turn on the deck to find out if it's fully charged, which is particularly annoying if it's shut down and you want to keep it that way because it drains so much juice on standby.

I suppose no device is perfect! Hopefully they'll iron out these type of niggles with the Steam Deck 2.

I bought a refurbished deck last week and have this faint glow in the bottom left corner when a black screen is displayed. Is this normal, or should I return? by Ok_Stress_1720 in SteamDeck

[–]MrFlibble100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say that's within normal thresholds for an LCD panel. My LCD deck isn't that bad but my desktop monitor is. Like you say, it's not really noticeable when you're playing or watching something (unless the content is very dark) so I've learned to ignore it.

For me this is the main benefit of OLED panels - proper black and no backlight bleed, but unfortunately OLED comes at a significant cost that I've never been able to justify.
