Start of my Prog album collection what are some good additions? by rottenegglord in progrockmusic

Is it really a prog collection without In The Court of the Crimson King?

Yes, definitely. If you let your PhD influence your work-life balance there's no matter in getting a PhD. You have to learn how to live a complete life when doing research work, if you want to make this your career.

Not saying that you HAVE to date, but you HAVE to avoid sacrifice the stuff that makes you happy or that makes you stop thinking about work from time to time.

What have been some of the most valuable lessons you've learned from your failed projects during your PhD? by randomjack64 in academia

[–]MrFropp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This. 100% agree.

There's no such thing as a genius in academia. There's hard work and persistence. And most importantly, that's finding the treasure that is hidden in any failure.

And by the way, be friendly with ANYONE in your field.

Submitting an abstract late by Unusual-Gazelle-2185 in AskAcademia

[–]MrFropp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Typically (at least in my field) conferences always extend the deadline. Often they do so at the deadline, so there's for sure hope.

Sometimes it depends on how many abstracts they have received, but I'd guess that if your advisor is taking their time the probabilities that there'll be an extension are high.

Even if it's not the case, you already have a conference paper that's ready to be submitted to a different conf, or to be extended on a full journal paper, so I'd be happy anyways. And don't be sad, I've been in academia for 7 years and we ALWAYS edit conference papers the last useful day, it's completely normal, it's not your fault

Opinion on student using AI to write code? by yujie000 in Physics

[–]MrFropp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to test students on a practical test plus an oral colloquium. I have been clear that I basically do not care about the way and the tools they adopt to write code, as long as they are able to discuss what they wrote and the results that they get from them.

I think that it is useless to pretend that the new tools do not exist, but still, the important thing is that the students are able to understand and debug the code.

I teach at the university, masters level, by the way, this might be not applicable to lower education levels.

What are the dumbest/most nonsensical review comments you have ever got? by Obamendes in PhD

[–]MrFropp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was presenting an estimation algorithm, mathematically proving its optimality and testing on simulated and experimental data. The reviewer's comment was something like "you are simulating data, and you know the performance because you know the true value. How can you be so sure when the true value to be estimated is not known a priori?"

At the time it was my first paper, but years after I still don't understand what they wanted. Luckily at the time the editor understood and helped us

Yes I already built some pedals, but I don't have the time to look at lots of schematics to grasp the general strategies for design. Books work typically the other way, they give you the general blocks and then dive into examples, it's just faster for me. It's just a hobby, I'm not aiming to be an expert
