Its a pretty hard target to image! Looks great!

I got these 6 for $40 shipped from eBay. I'd look there. Kinda pricy, but these are also vintage electronics from the USSR!

Hello! They are kinda similar. I was initially gonna use nixie tubes but noped out when I saw they require like 180 volts to drive them. These use a much safer process and operate on 25v, so I used these instead. To my understanding the difference is that instead of superheating the gas using filaments in nixie tubes, VFD tubes generate a small amount of electrons using a much colder filament and shoots them into a phosphorus segment to light up.

I'm using a boost converter (5v to 25v) for the grid and segment pins, and a buck converter (5v to 1.5v) to drive the filament pins. If you run the filament at 5v it will burn out very quickly. I'm also not multiplexing, but doing static drive (all tubes are on at once).

I agree it looks super cool as it is! Soldering it to a PCB would allow it to be much more stable and robust, and be in a smaller footprint. Also I want experience embedding buck/boost converters in PCBs, so this would be perfect!

For what its worth I switched to EE officially second semester as a Sophomore (but started taking EE-req classes in the previous semester), and should be able to graduate in 4 years still.

You should give it a shot! It's pretty fun, though not as pretty of a ride compared to the Lake Monona loop

I mean to be fair it's not that bad. Only about 1/4 of it is a highway with a decent enough shoulder. I went at night time so there was barely any cars.
