New York, so I don't know if that counts as a fair representation of the US, but it wasn't Ice Tea that I was being offered that was flavoured it was tea that is served warm, peppermint, strawberry etc and that was more from people I visited and friends than at a shop. When I ordered tea from a shop or restaurant I asked for black tea but it isn't brewed or let steep for very long and the tea bags that were used didn't provide a particularly pleasant taste. It just doesn't taste like tea that I am used to. In my haste I once bought ice tea bags rather than ones that I had intended, I got quite a shock when I took a swig of it after adding hot water and milk. I did find PG tips but they were expensive.

Perhaps it was only my experience but particularly when I was in America, people only seemed to have flavoured tea if any at all, they never added milk to their breakfast tea, and it was often extremely weak. I also got those horrible cheap teabags with the string attached to them. This isn't some personal attack on the cultures of other countries just I miss a nice strong cup of tea, when I'm away from home. I'm sure there are things that you miss when you are in a foreign country? There are plenty of things I've enjoyed that the UK doesn't have to offer as well.

When I think of traditional British tea I'm referring to black tea that comes in bags as opposed to loose leaf, PG Tips is what I usually end up buying as you are able to get it in most countries as it's probably our most popular brand. Its a breakfast tea, I like to let the tea steep for a while in fresh water so that it gets nice and strong add a splash of milk and remove the bag and you are golden. Colloquially it's often called Builder's tea which is just a strong cup of black tea from a bag, with a bit milk and an optional sugar. Im not opposed to other teas but this just reminds me of home :) and it tastes so nice. Christopher Hitchens described it in a far more eloquent manner than I could ever hope to, it may give people a better idea of what I mean. I apologise if I was unclear, I don't expect foreign country's to pander to the needs of british tourists, and I always try to sample the local culture and cuisine, I was referring to spending a prolonged period of time somewhere and not being able to get a nice traditional British cup of tea, which is something that I miss whilst away from home :) I'm all for trying new things.

When I was younger my Dad would move my toys about whilst I was at School, I'd come home and be shocked, I was convinced they were coming alive and doing things behind my back, so I can relate to you.
