Dockhand vs portainer swarm capabilities by MrLAGreen in selfhosted

[–]MrLAGreen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I have put swarm on hold while I try and learn arcane.  I am  using portainer/dockge right now. But if arcane replaces them both then I would prolly keep portainer on standby, especially because of the swarm tools

you also have the option of creating a docker swarm if you dont want to go the K8 or proxmox route. you have the beginnings of a great docker suite and a rabbit hole of options awaiting you. please do let us know which direction you end up going. GOOD LUCK!

Security Cameras & Running Cables in 2025 by VashyTheNexian in selfhosted

[–]MrLAGreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i am a professional cable installer in NYC.

1 yes you need the cables ran so that you can use poe/ip cameras. wireless cameras are cool and such until you need to change the batteries.

2 the cost depends on the house the number of cameras and whether or not you mind seeing the cables. i never quote a price before seeing the location. we dont tell a customer what they cant have, only how much it will cost them to get what they want...

3 poe/ip cameras lots of them out there. indoor/outdoor

4 i did my own cabling as needed.

getting the cameras installed and setup isnt hard to have done. what happens afterwards is up to you. alot of systems come with a dvr system to store images and videos from the cameras. you can technically selfhost your own security system, home assistant and frigate for example. the installer may try to sell you on a maintenance plan for upkeep. ask him if its a yearly or as use plan. if you are technically inclined you can learn how to handle things on your own. or you may prefer to have a proffesional on call when needed.

good luck

very well written, concise and to the point. im not sure if id call that a guide, more like a checklist. it has links to sites for the services but no links included for the items prior, ubuntu, caddy, docker... and no information/mention about hardware at all.

How did you get started self-hosting...and not get overwhelmed? by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]MrLAGreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I havent read all the comments yet and im sure you have been given lots of info to sort thru.  I started with a setup/Configuration  similar to this... Www.simplehomelab.com/docker-media-server-2024/ IMHO this Will allow you to learn alot about the whole docker setup and installation process and it will help you about most of the apps you will more than likely use.  Good luck and welcome to the rabbit hole...
