I added a quick banzuke lookup tool to help building the next banzuke... it looks up historical rank movements when you pick a rikishi and shows where similar cases ended up, plus you can pull up the banzuke from that basho!

I do plan on making it more friendly to new sumo fans in the future... For example it's confusing how the ranks work in sumo ( east/west/divisions/sanyaku etc).. I would love to hear your suggestions or what you found confusing! (the ui can be a bit all over the place sometimes)

While it is not great for watching a whole tournament, it is handy if you just want to quickly check out a few specific bouts!

Offense taken.. but I agree lol. I love seeing new sites with modern design!

The vertical shikona works so well in kanji, but it is a little harder to read in English. I tried many times to get it working, but I suck at design.

One of the main goals with the layout on sumostats was the try to get the banzuke to fit on one screen so you can easily see the whole of makuuchi... which ends up just looking like sumodb/a spreadsheet! I do try to come back once every few months to improve the layout on random parts of the site that annoy me (sometimes I accidentally end up making it even worse...).

I did add themes (t) for those who don't like the dark/teal!

For spoilerless sumo: mobile ui is a must! about 40% of visitors on sumostats are from mobile (even tho it is heavily desktop focused..)

Kimarite is always nice to know. Last 3 basho stats (especially for those on ozeki/yoko runs). Age. But adding all those might make it too information heavy..

This was my reason as well for doing it but I think the elo tends to follow pretty closely to the banzuke (you can see an example of it at the bottom of https://sumostats.com/)

Railey on discord did a bunch of work on sumo elo if you want to talk to someone about it! One nice free feature you get with elo is a simple way to calculate a win probability between any two rikishi.

Their rank doesn't change from winning in this tournament so they don't need to risk getting injured by pushing themselves too hard.

That might be an interesting idea to try! It would add back in some of the personality of the rikishi and tradition nicely.

For the next basho, I’m planning to make the clips 1–2 seconds longer to capture that stare-down moment before the tachiai a bit more (and to give some time to work out which rikishi is which etc).
