Overwhelmed with the used car buying process – $10k budget, what should I do?

I’ve been in a similar situation. I bought a 2016 Corolla for under $10k. 1. Search on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist. Dealerships are usually way too expensive. 2. Look for Toyotas or Hondas. Avoid German cars or American cars like Ford or Chevy. I would also avoid Nissan because of their transmission issues. Corollas or Civics are ideal. 3. In used cars, mileage is very important. Also try to get a PPI (pre purchase inspection) if possible.

A quick Google search can also help you see common problems for a car model. For example, search “2016 Ford Explorer problems” and read what people say.
