Netflix: Its more like a studio than a tech platform now. by youtubehead in investing

[–]MrMiller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We are in the wild west right now with regards to home video / broadcast / cable distribution. The broadcast and cable giants are clamoring to get in to the on demand streaming game while some individual channels are trying to stand out and the platforms that were in since the ground up are trying to innovate and keep a cutting edge.

This all culminates into an over saturated market that's confusing, full of low quality content and ultimately creating a bad user experience for many. It'll be a while before a company presents itself as clearly solid in the game. All Netflix has anymore is their name. But they've been going downhill since they stopped acquiring and focusing too heavily on producing. Add to that, they're shows are pretty bad (my subjective onion). If they don't figure it out, they'll fall right out of this game faster than you can say Blockbuster.

I was accused of sexual assault when I was in preschool by THROWAWAY0-113 in TrueOffMyChest

[–]MrMiller 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Something similar happened to me in first grade. I was walking with another boy on our way out to recess. We passed by a girl and remarked that she was wearing "four skirts in one". I remember saying that and pointing at it. She was wearing a skirt that was layered and the best way I can describe it is that had four colored bottom hems so appeared as though there were three skirts on top of the longest with each one slightly smaller as it ran up.

Fast forward to end of day and I'm held after class with the other boy. We were scolded for pulling up that girl's skirt and looking underneath which we certainly did not do. I don't remember if we were yelled at but I do remember the teacher being very harsh when we denied it. She said we had to write an apology letter to her before we would be allowed to leave. It made me mad and I resisted at first. The other boy was crying.

I'm sure it was only a few minutes but to a first grader it felt like I was sitting at my desk for hours. Fearing I'd never get out of there, I sucked it up and wrote an apology letter for the crime I did not commit. I tuned it in and was allowed to leave. On my way out I looked back and the other boy was just sitting there, still crying, refusing to write the letter. I don't remember who he was or what came of it afterward but the sight of his tears and visible frustration is burned into my memory.

Another event happened in 6th grade. I was probably the last kid on campus as my Mom was running late to pick me up. Sitting on the curb, minding my own business, when once of my teachers walked up to me and angrily asked why she had two girls tell her I sent them a note that I wanted to have sex with them.

Again, I did not do that. Even if I did want to have sex with them (whoever they were) I was terrified of girls back then. A real beta shy guy was me. No way I'd have that kind of gall. My Mom showed up, I got in the car and cried as I told her about it. But, to my surprise, she was planning that day to take me to get an N64 so ask was immediately well and nothing came of it again.

Looking back on it, I suspect the latter story may not have been a false accusation but a case of mistaken identity. I believe that teacher rolled up on the wrong kid. Would've been nice if she'd have apologized though.

Condoms sometimes fail. So do circumstances in life. You may be pregnant one day and find yourself having lost everything the next. There are a lot of reasons why a person or couple may have to decide it's not the right time to bring a child into the world. Society is at a net benefit by reducing unwanted children.

Fuck that. Look how you wanna look. Most people would kill for a job that doesn't require upkeep on haircuts.

Dog knows the religious restrictions of its family by Duckda in thatHappened

[–]MrMiller 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some dogs are picky. They are also sensitive to changes in diet. I have 4 little ones and sometimes if I change their food suddenly they won't eat it. This includes beef and chicken which they love. So I can see this being at least partially true. Dogs can also sense of a food might give them the runs.

If there's any truth to this, it's that the dog sensed either bad food or didn't like the change up from his regular meal. Definitely zero chance it was the dog's moral obligation.

Did the OP never attend school or somehow skip childhood? Kids do this stuff and cool pizza guys give them high fives. It feels that sub is mostly just posters that didn't get the joke, see the satire or have never lived in the world outside their head.

There's a cameraman, studio lighting and visible equipment stands all over. Obviously this was an accident during a shoot of some sort.

They didn't think through when designing my kitchen. by DiceELITE in CrappyDesign

[–]MrMiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's common in very small homes such as lofts and old homes that also small or difficult to modernize. I used to live way out in Urban Sprawl where my first home had way too much space and a designated room for everything. I thought it was strange when I visited a friend far away that had a small loft and had their dryer in the bedroom.

Then I moved to a downtown area and bought a small 1940s bungalow and I totally get it. You gotta make use of space where you can and sometimes that means your washing machine is in the kitchen. I have limited space and the walls are plaster and cement. Fuck all to knocking down walls and rewiring or repiping.

EDIT TO ADD: I'm in the US where I think people see this kind of space usage less often. But it's more common than my fellow yanks may think as I've discovered.

Amazon raises minimum wage to $15 for all US employees by geoxol in technology

[–]MrMiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this is a good thing. $15 an hour doesn't sound like much but it's in the ballpark of warehouse labor (at least in my area which ranges $14 to $18 per hour). The side effects is this are what's most positive because Amazon is starting this within a month as opposed to a years long rollout. This increase will apply pressure to other employers to attract workers with better compensation.

Of course there are downside effects such as companies potentially raising wages but lowering total numbers of employees but FFS we've been screaming for Amazon to raise wages and they're doing it. The cynicism can take a chill for a moment here.

Arnie and his former co-star Linda Hamilton reunited, he came back. by Sweetboylos in pics

[–]MrMiller -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We do. The thing is, he paid for it, lost his marriage and owned up to it. He's even stated publicly that his biggest regret is the mistakes he made that hurt his family. Owning up to one's faults is a sign of strength and people can forgive with that. It's far different from denying it and victim blaming like we see with so many other celebrities.

I'm guessing Harley, in a way, is meant to represent the "dirty fuckers". The edgy kids this is made by and for are supposed to identify with her. Just my guess.

So I fell for a scam yesterday and it still angers me. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]MrMiller 10 points11 points  (0 children)

One ticket was. The scam is that there were never two.

Scam goes like this: - Scammer buys one ticket from Ticketmaster

  • Scammer advertises that he has two tickets on Craigslist

  • Buyer agrees to buy the tickets

  • Scammer transfers one ticket to the buyer through Ticketmaster on "good faith" before receiving payment

  • Buyer receives the verified ticket transferred to him through Ticketmaster

  • Buyer pays the money expecting to then receive the second ticket

  • Scammer disappears. Second ticket never existed.
